Easy hike to the beautiful lake. Can sit all day beside it.

A bit technical towards the top. Well worths the effort though. Choose a sunny day if you can. Good visibility doubles the payout. Can’t miss!

Hiked up from Ebino Eco Museum Center (Toilet and Paid Parking) to Mt. Karakunidake passing Mt. Ioyama (Off-limits). From Mt. Karakunidake down to Mt. Shishikodake and a left to Mt. Ohata as the track from Mt. Shishikodake to Mt. Nakadake is closed.Back to Mt. Karakunidake on the same route and then down to Onami Pond, a right turn and back to the parking. Track from Onami Pond to Mt. Karakunidake is quite steep and mostly stairs. Map > http://kirishimakankou.com/pdf/kirishima_tr_map_en.pdf

Trail start: Many thanks to the first reviewer who provided exact coordinates to the entrance of the trail. Parking is right next to it. Trail: The trail is well paved with never ending steps and discreetly placed rocks. I would say that the relevant agencies who had first put up the route did a really good job to benefit all hikers. Careful of slippery rocks when wet. Route: Start off at the entrance and hike upwards 1.2km to Lake Omani, a crater lake. This is also known as the Lake Omani trailhead. Next you have the option to complete the Lake Omani Trail Loop. Turning right will bring you East (the longer route) and left, West. But both will bring back to the trailhead. You will hike along the ridge of the lake. We started with the East and thankfully so as that was a lot more picturesque than the West. Somewhere in the middle of both East and West options (you will see an emergency hut here) is another route (1.2km) towards Mount Karakunidake. The gradient is steep but the views are absolutely breath taking and worth it at the summit. At the summit you have the option to take another route towards the Ebino Highlands, but we went back to the Lake Omani trailhead.

This was the most memorable hiking experience I ever had! Maybe, partially - because it was the first one, and maybe because it was the only time in my life when I was hiking in a highly volcanic area. The views of crater lakes filled with rich teal water, were amazing!
