Moderate run, tough in places with steep gradient and sections of steps. Takes about 1 hr 20 mins to run from Shugakuin station to top and back down again. Fairly easy to follow trail. Interesting track following stream and then through heavily wooded area, with great views. Changes from deciduous to cedar as you go up. Huge sections near top where trees have been blown down but trail cleared or short diversions in place.

We hiked up route described, then down the Biwa Lake side and took train back to Kyoto Station. Saw several small snakes. Great hike!

Don't follow starting point. Best to follow the canal up to a connecting trail. There is a landslide that blocks the trail and you have to add a mile around.

Pleasant hike. We are avid hikers and thought the grade was nice and good exercise! Hardly any bugs, no snakes either. Lots of trees blown down, honestly not a whole lot to look at. A few spots to view Kyoto which was cool. Got a beer at the rest stop on top, going to ride the cable car down!

Some trails marked on map were not clear but trail used was well marked and easy to follow. Some snakes and large insects at the beginning while at lower altitude. Recommend it as moderate.

A great hike of Hiei. Take the bus to Shugakuin. You'll see a river at the stop. walk along that river up to the trailhead (called Kirara-oka). You take that all the way up, no way to get lost. You will have to pay 600 yen to enter the facilities. You can return or walk through the temple compound and descend to Sakamoto station and ride that back to Kyoto. There are wild monkeys on the hike sometimes, but they won't approach you.
