Hiked fall 2017. A spiritual event even for a non spiritual person. Kyoto sunset with Osaka as the horizon was amazing.

Very interesting views. Nice walk and lots of shrines. Worth it.

This was a decent hike. Lots of scenery. It is heavily trafficked. Great if you like to meditate. If you start from kibuneguchi station sugges you take the bus close by. You can follow the people. This saves you 1.5 miles going uphill and nothing to see as you hike alongside a road. Beware of leaches as I got 2 on my feet. Of course it was raining. We elected to take the cable car down which is about 200 yen per person for adults

a walk like no other in the world, scattered with traditional temples, shrines, statues and Torii. continue all the way to the top. a lot of people stop at the Kyoto viewing station. peaceful

This is a great hike! You see both beautiful nature and architecture. There are a lot of stairs to climb but there's plenty to see without getting to the top for different fitness levels. There isn't any exceptional view from the top, so the enjoyment comes from the journey and the I did it! feels at the summit. You also get to enjoy the Shinto spiritual atmosphere and appreciate the culture and nature. It was quite busy the day I went, but it felt nice to share the feeling with so many people. It's well maintained and definitely not wilderness hiking. Definitely worth visiting :)

Lovely, picturesque, serene if go on weekday & early morning (by 7:30AM). Good workout too.

Definitely a hike. Hundreds of steps up and down around the mountain here surrounded by bright red torii or gates. It's a magical experience everyone should do in their lifetime. World class.

Pleasant hike. We are avid hikers and thought the grade was nice and good exercise! Hardly any bugs, no snakes either. Lots of trees blown down, honestly not a whole lot to look at. A few spots to view Kyoto which was cool. Got a beer at the rest stop on top, going to ride the cable car down!

Top down from the Gondola. Great views and not busy!

Beautiful temples but bamboo forest sooo crowded and not very impressive. Not a difficult hike/walk

Great trail. I would recommend taking the trail that is not line with tori gates that starts from behind the shrine. At least for one way. It's much less crowded. I saw maybe about 7 people on that trail. Much more peaceful and line by bamboo forrest. There are also a bunch of smaller shrine along the way.

A great way to spend a day away from the crowds. This route follows part of “The Kyoto Trail” and was well marked and easy to follow.

Great trail with decent views, shrines and historical markers along the way. Steep in some places, but not technical with steps most of the way up the main trail. If you’re coming from the Hozukyo train station suggest going along the gorge trail southwest of the start/end point.

Fantastic trail. Challenging, but not too technical. Late Feb is a great time to do it. Not to hot and still snow up at the shrine - adds to the magic of the place. Stop at the little tea room for tea and soup at the end of the trail!

An outstanding hike with a mountaintop temple. Light snow above 700 m which was particularly atmospheric. Great views of Kyoto 3/4 of the way up. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, the app kept shut down on me while I was recording so I gave up recording. If you're in Kyoto, you don't want to miss this place! There are no fees to get in. Amazing place to be! You can get a good exercise by running up to the stairs. Recommend to go during the day since it gets really dark at night with even some lights. I completed the whole torii loops, truly amazing place to be! I will come back with my workout outfit next time, high heels took me little longer to finish it, although I got it done in about 2.5 hours by running up and down!

on Kurama Trail

Sadly, it’s closed right now (Dec 2018) because of downed trees after a typhoon... But I ended up taking the train from Kibune to Kurama, and the towns, shrines and the hot springs were all great!

Such an awesome Hike. Like no other. 10,000 beautiful torii gates lead you to the top of Inari Mountain. Very nice gardens and a few decent views of the city.

Can be a crowded walk, although it thins out a little as you get higher up. You can step off the main trail at some points and walk outside the gates for a different perspective (and fewer people).

A really nice moderate trek if you are visiting Kyoto for a single day and love to visit a picturesque place in Kyoto.

Great hike through tall trees, pretty epic finish at the top. There is a water machine at the top but I’d recommend bringing plenty. There are several trail options, all good, some busier than others. There is a good free paper map at the bottom of the trails.

Kurama trail done the reverse way as this path shows. Starting in the steep stairs of the temple, this is where most of the photos should be taken. It's first going up and then down. The reverse path is easier than the one this guide shows. Both starting and finishing areas are kind of expensive, so prepare food on advance. There is no water between Kurama temple and the kaiseki restaurants near Kibuneguchi. However, at the entrance of the path you can get wooden walking staffs which help a lot. Landscape is beautiful, specially nice so close from Kioto, but nothing spectacular.

An extended walk after Philosopher’s walk, culture and beautiful cherry blossoms with colorful kimonos.

A Shinto shrine. Mostly paved with a lot of stairs. Many small shrines along the way. Tori gates cover much of the trail. Nice view of Kyoto half way up. The trail is lit after dark. Many shops for food and souvenirs, but only open during the day. Lots of vending machines - so, it’s not necessary to bring water. The All Trails map is missing half of the loop trail at the top of the mountain.

Beautiful well maintained trail between Kibune and Kurama. Good inclines and declines. We walked it with backpacks but we saw ladies in dresses on the trail. Gorgeous area!
