Great trail, long but without technical difficulties.

First off this is a hard hike. AllTrails needs to update this.

3800 feet in 3.2 miles isn’t a joke.

And plenty of people die on Monte Legnone. Don’t believe me? Lookup “morte” and “Monte Legnone”... there’s plenty of tragedies.

With that said let’s get to the first detailed review of this hike on AllTrails.

Reviews on other websites give completion times anywhere from 4.5 hours to 8+ hours round trip. I finished in 7 hours. I took lots of picture breaks and view breaks and a 20-ish minute lunch. Give yourself time if you like to linger and be sure to know the current sunset time. Also check the weather.

The drive up from Lake Como to the parking lot is an adventure itself! Very narrow and twisting and turning. Heads up on that.

The first mile from the parking lot is a good introduction to this hike. There’s some signs and directions. Also a sign tells you to bring a little firewood if you’re going to the top for people who get stuck. So if you see a couple twigs drag them on up. The trail is pretty leisurely as you pass goats and goat farms.

From the first mile to mile 2 you get to know what you’re up against. The trail gets rocky and increases in altitude quickly. There’s lots of great photo opportunities along the way.

From mile 2 to the summit it’s the real deal. The rocky trail has some scrambling and ropes to help you along.

I saw a herd of ibex when I was up there! Really cool to see.

From the sign post/trail junction 0.2 miles below the summit, the trail has iron rungs and ropes and gets narrow and unforgiving in places. Careful up there.

Up on the summit you can see the Matterhorn and all the way to Mont Blanc. The view is stunning in all directions.

Once you’re done soaking in that alpine air you head back down... and your knees will never forgive you.

This hike was the best thing I did while visiting Lake Como. It’s a beautiful hike.

It was somewhat challenging but worth the effort. I would recommend it to those over 75, like myself who enjoy walking and hiking for exercise

Very beautiful trail, great views. Refugo is very pleasant.

Heavy trail for running! Many parts have to be taken slowly. 100% off-road within nature.

First off my fellow hikers please do not follow my map! My GPS tracking looks like I’m a caged mouse scurrying around looking for her cheese! I couldn’t even find the gelato store when I got off the Ferry in Varenna

Beautiful Cathedral, spectacular view of Milan from Roof Top, and many places to see in Milan.

Ran on the Greenway path two mornings in a row from our Air bnb in Ossuccio on Lake Como. The path is fantastic and well marked by signs in many places. Most of the path is flat along the lake shore but part of it goes up above the lake into the foothill neighborhoods by a big church and then back down to the lake shore. Beautiful views the whole way, lots of birds, and you pass through one cool small village after another on the lake from start to finish. Wubba lubba dub dub!

Short walk from the stunning views at the top of the Pigra cablecar is the Belvedere lookout. Easy walk through town then through some woods to a bench and picnic table at the lookout.

Hiked up to Castle Vezio from the main square of Varenna where the ferry docks. Short but steep walk up starting among the restaurants downtown up past some residences up the hill and further up next to some woods until you reach the top of the hill where the castle is. Tickets are 4 euro per person and you can walk around the whole castle which isn't huge but the views are spectacular looking south at Bellagio and the split of lake Como. Amazing views of the lake and surrounding mountains. Very cool spot and did the whole journey from the ferry up and back down in less than an hour to catch the boat back to our next destination.

It's an easy hike but with lots of breath taking views of the mountains. If you have a friend who is not into hiking :) you can go all the way to the rifugio Vodala (almost half way through the climb) by the ski lift, then continue the hike on foot to Monte Benfit.

A great half day walk. Cerreto is interesting - you can learn all about the Cerretani in the middle ages - it's the derivation of our word charletan. You find a carved Roman inscription on a stone in a very unlikely place and on the walk back towards Borgo Cerreto you join the track of the famous old Spoleto-Norcia railway, including passing through a short tunnel
