Cinque Terre means "five lands," or "five earths" in Italian, and is so named after the five iconic colorful towns that are perched side by side on the Italian Riviera coast. There are popular trails that connect the towns together and hiking from town to town is one of the most popular tourist activities in the area. The most popular route is along the Sentiero Azzurro, or the Blue Trail. It is easy to hike shorter portions of this trail, as there is a train that stops at all the towns and runs consistently throughout the day. The five official towns that make up Cinque Terre, in West to East order, are: 1. Monterosso al Mare 2. Vernazza 3. Corniglia 4. Manarola 5. Riomaggiore There are no fences around the park, so it can be visited any time and day of the year. A Cinque Terre card is required to hike Sentiero Azzurro, or the Blue trail, possibly in addition to other hikes in the park. These can be purchased in the railways stations and welcome centers of the villages.Show more
