Length: 4.7 mi • Est. 2 h 51 m
There is parking at the start at Rifugio Pornito. This is a well maintained trail up to the Christ the Redeemer statue. Make sure you stop off on the way up to see the Church of San Michele Arcangelo. Beware that there's no shade (probably not a great hike in the summer heat) and no restrooms (plan ahead). This is a popular descent for mountain bikers, so you you might need to scramble to the side if you see them coming.Show more

Length: 7.4 mi • Est. 4 h 44 m
Depart from Ascrea toward Monte Navegna, which features beautiful vistas of both Lake Turano and Salto. A long path, with some stretches more for expert hikers going a safe pace. Never too exposed or dangerous, but varying sloped paths and passages with different types of landscape and terrain. The view that can be enjoyed from the cross on the summit of the mountainincludes both Lake Turano and the valley of Salto Lake. You can also see both Mount Terminillo and Velino. CONS: in some places the path is not well signposted (a gps helps a lot). The path downhill is a little worn and some passages are overgrown.Show more

Length: 9.4 mi • Est. 3 h 56 m
The Appian Way (Latin and Italian: Via Appia) was one of the earliest and strategically most important Roman roads of the ancient republic. It connected Rome to Brindisi, in southeast Italy. Its importance is indicated by its name. Poet Statius once wrote, "Appia longarum teritur regina viarum," or "The Appian way is the queen of the long roads." The road is named after Appius Claudius Caecus, the Roman censor who began and completed the first section as a military road to the south in 312 BC during the Samnite Wars.Show more
