Length: 31.1 mi • Est. Multi-day
The Grande Traversata Elbana or GTE represents the most significant itinerary of the Elba Island excursion network. It is a ridge that connects most of the Elban paths, allowing you to observe the incredible geological, vegetational and morphological variety of the island. The route can be easily traveled in stages, as it is connected for all its extension with rapid connection ways with the inhabited centers, where it is possible to stay overnight or use public transport to return to the place of stay. The GTE starts from the inhabited center of Cavo and, following the ridge, it heads westward, upstream of the village of Porto Azzurro. It continues inland until it climbs Mount Perone. Subsequently, it arrives near Monte Capanne, where it forks into two branches. Of these: one heads south and reaches the town of Pomonte following the ridge that divides the valley of the same name from Vallebuia, the other instead embraces Monte Capanne cutting the northern slope into the coast and ending on the provincial road, in Loc. Patresi Mortaio . The first section in common of the GTE, that is from the Cavo to the bifurcation, near the Passo delle Filicaie, has a journey time of about 15 hours. In some stretches the gradients are challenging, therefore, in order not to make the days of walking excessively long and tiring, the best thing would be to divide the excursion into 4 parts, with deviations towards Porto Azzurro, Procchio and Poggio, where to spend the night (long camping is forbidden). Near the departure, from the inhabited center of Cavo (Fraction of the municipality of Rio) you immediately find a detour to visit the Tonietti Mausoleum. The road then climbs up to Monte Grosso, where a military observation post was located, from which you can enjoy a breathtaking view. Subsequently it goes down until it touches the provincial road n. 33 of the Parata, flanking the Vignolo ditch in a pleasant shady up and down, cross the Valle delle Fiche and then reach Aia di Cacio where the path crosses the road that leads to Nisporto and Nisportino. In a few minutes you can also reach, following the path 203, the Orto dei Semplici near the hermitage of Santa Caterina. Cross the road and take the path again: a steep rocky section leads, in sequence, to La Croce, just above the built-up area of Rio nell'Elba, and finally to Monte Capannello, another nice point observation point from which the two sides (eastern and western) of the island can be seen simultaneously. A few meters below, the track goes into a pine forest and almost immediately crosses the provincial road n. 32 of Volterraio, whose castle dominates the Gulf of Portoferraio majestically. This second stretch, from Aia di Cacio to Le Panche, takes 1 hour and 20 minutes to walk. The road then climbs up to reach Cima del Monte (502 m) and, continuing downhill further south, after a while the crossroads with the paths n. 220 and with the path n. 205 (for expert hikers) that leads to the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato. Continuing on the GTE, after about 2 hours and 30 minutes of walking from the Aia di Cacio you arrive at the junction with path n. 210 which, slipping through the vineyards, takes around 30 minutes to reach Porto Azzurro. The second stage of the GTE is wider and smoother. Going up to Monte Orello and leaving the Grande Traversata Elbana for a few hundred meters, you can plan a brief stop with a panoramic view of the Stella Gulf and of Capoliveri. However, it is necessary to retrace your steps, and then take an old military road which, past the Colle Reciso pass and the Poggio del Molino a Vento (here you can make a detour to the left to visit the remains of an ancient mill), he continues at the same altitude up to take the descent that crosses the provincial road n. 25, a few hundred meters from Procchio. The average journey times of this second stage are as follows: junction path n. 210 - provincial road crossing no. 26, 1 hour of walking; provincial road crossing no. 26 - Picchiaie, 30 minutes of walking; Picchiaie - Colle Reciso, 30 minutes walk; Colle Reciso - Poggio del Molino a Vento, 45 minutes walk; Poggio del Molino a Vento - crossroads with paths n. 248 and n. 214, 45 minutes of walking; crossroads with paths n. 248 and n. 214 - intersection with provincial road n. 25, 2 hours and 20 minutes of walking. The third stage of the GTE leads from Procchio to Poggio. After leaving the paved road, the path climbs up to Monte Castello where it would be interesting to make a brief exploration of the surroundings to discover, hidden by the Mediterranean scrub, the ruins of a large Etruscan fortress, built here to controlShow more

Buon@camminataShow more
