Best trails in Trasaghis, Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Cavazzo lake is the largest natural lake in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Also known by the name of Lake of the Three Municipalities, however recognized (rightly) by the municipality of Cavazzo Carnico. The valley of the lake was crossed before the last glaciations by the Tagliamento river. During the last glaciation it was occupied by an imposing ice cap that extended up beyond the current sliding bed of the Tagliamento. Upon its withdrawal, the glacier left a deep depression and a barrier of conglomerates that separates the lake from the Tagliamento valley ("Sella di Mena") to the north. The lake subsequently formed stretched up to the Tagliamento (current course) but withdrew, leaving a wreck of a glacial lake basin of almost double dimensions. Currently, in addition to the waters of the hydrographic basin, the waters of the Ambiesta or Verzegnis reservoir are poured after a journey through the tunnel and hydroelectrically at the exit near Somplago. You can reach the Malga Cuar in many different ways including by car on a very long 21 km dirt track. It is a rather sought-after location because it is a base to easily reach the summit of Mount Cuar just 150m. It allows a very wide view of western Friuli: the Tagliamento River and the Pianura di Destra. The two paths CAI 815 and 817 are both great. It is worth noting that both of them intercept a forest road at an altitude of 1000m with which to get around the east side and then easily climb through slightly demanding paths and reach the pastures. The road from Avasinis (Trasaghis) or Monte Prat (Forgaria Nel Friuli) are normally narrow but well maintained. Show more
