Best trails in San Daniele del Friuli, Friuli-Venezia Giulia

The Ragogna lake is the result of a long intermorenic glacial stagnation (2nd and 3rd morainic arch of the Tilaventum glacier) of Friuli. It is 12,000 years old and is characterized by an elliptical shape, with a diameter of half a mile and a depth of about 10 m. It is very fishy thanks to the forced sowing of fry. The water chestnut still grows in this lake along with water lilies and buttercups. Not far from the lake is the important Jewish cemetery with the oldest tomb dated 1742; this is due to the refusal of the Municipality of San Daniele to share a single cemetery.Show more

This is a small middle section of the Via di Allemagna and the Via del Tagliamento, an old roman road that went from Krakow in Poland through all the way to Rome. It develops on a slight undulating morphology between San Daniele and the steep left bank of the Tagliamento. You will reach the Hospital of San Tommaso, which has existed since 1199. It is a centuries-old testimony to the fact that the region Friuli Venezia Giulia has historically been a transit region: a bridge between middle Europe and the Mediterranean, between the Cispadania and the Metaponto and the crossroad of the Christian pilgrimage from Northern Europe to Rome and Jerusalem.
