Length: 10.8 mi • Est. 6 h 21 m
This hike to the Giramondo Pass enters the first large valley close to the Periadriatic Seam - a distinct geologic fault. The route is immersed in an alpine environment of remarkable beauty on the Austrian border. The basin where the Bordaglia lake is located is one of the most precious natural jewels of the Carnic Alps. From F. Avoltri, after the bridge over the Degano, you follow a paved road to the Cava di Marmo (1075 m asl) which offers the highly prized Fior di Pesco Carnico with a chromed carbonate composition. Here you leave your car and take the CAI path n°140 path and you will reach the Stretta dei Fleons in about 2 km. Continue on a steep, but comfortable mule track that crosses a pine forest. The Degano torrent is bordered by the track and offers a pouring background sound and also unusual views of waterfalls and cascades. Once at the Stretta dei Fleons, a spring offers fresh water and shortly after you will meet the junction for Sella Sissanis and leave the CAI path n ° 142 on the right. Continue with the path still rolling on the CAI path n°140 which turns left towards the Calvi Refuge until you reach Casera Fleons. From here, for a junction of the Sentiero Italia (CAI path n°403), you go to the completely ruined Casera di Sissanis di Sotto (1680 m asl) and then go up the Sissanis Valley to the pass of the same name (1997). Looking towards the west from the pass you have the complete panorama of the Val Fleons with the summit of Mount Oregone at the bottom and, further south, Mount Navastolt as a forerunner of the Avanza Group and then of M.ta Chiadenis; always to the west but just below the valley of the Rio Sissanis just up, which sees north Crete Verde (2520 m) and Mt Chiastronat (2251 m) both with "Silurian" traces; to the east the terminal vault of the Volaia and the Punta Giramondo under which the Passo Giramondo (2005 m). Immediately under the Pera post-glacial lake (residue of a glacial lake that will disappear with the Climat Change) which can be reached in a few minutes for different sheep tracks caused by sheep grazing. The path to the Giramondo pass instead continues along the coast crossing a scree with a path retraced annually on the large fan reaches the Giramondo pass (called "Quota Pascolo 2005"). From here, if you want, you can continue on the Austrian path n° 403 to reach the glacial Lake Volaia and then to the Lambertenghi Refuge. From the Pass you can see the Monti Coglians and Chianevate (2,769 m) which represent the most ancient reliefs in the whole of Europe or, better, the beginning of the great evolution of the western part of the great Laurasia Plaque. This Massif is the oldest in the world of "organogenic" origin to be the most imposing Palaeozoic cliff visible today in Europe; older than the current Eurasian peninsula being 460-390 million years old; older than the entire Alpine-Himalayan (and Pyrenean) chain; richer casket of fossils from the Silurian-Devonian period with over 500 specimens. The morphology also indicates a formation not coming from the tectonic forces that affected the Alpine chain. Descend along the CAI 403 path for about half a kilometer and descend CAI path n°142A to Lake Bordaglia (for the sentimental "heart-shaped" but in reality pre-glacial still fed by the avalanches of the large limestone altarpiece of Volaia); it is formed by a basin of glacial origin occluded and favored by a fault at the basin itself. During this last stretch there is the "Line of Val Bordaglia" listed as Geosite, an area 750m wide and 2.5km long that extends to Passo Giramondo. It is a bundle of fractures affecting rocks of different ages formed from the Devonian to the Middle Triassic reaching the Carnic Triassic (210 M years Upper Triassic). You can reach the Casera Bordaglia di Sotto completely renewed, but no longer for dairy purposes, at the upper edge of the pine forest. From Lake Bordaglia as well as to the upper lake Pera, you have the opportunity to observe in detail the great Giogaia Alpina which rises between the contiguous Degano-Piave Valleys and the Val Pesarina: from the top of Monte Tuglia to Terza Grande. Once at the Casera Bordaglia di Sotto the path becomes a comfortable mule track which joins the CAI path n° 141 and leads back to the starting point. About a kilometer before crossing the Degano the track offers a pulpit on the Rio Bordaglia gorge.Show more
