#1 - Rifugio Vittorio Sella
Gran Paradiso National ParkLength: 5.9 mi • Est. 4 h 25 m
Part of this path follows the old hunting road of King Vittorio Emanuele II. The road runs alongside the Valnontey stream, crosses a mule track inside a larch forest and offers beautiful views of the valley below.
Arriving at Ponte delle Thoules on the Gran Lauson stream, the hardest part begins with a considerable slope on underground rocky plates. At 2224 m you pass near Alpe Pascieux, a cluster of crumbling wooden and stone huts and then arrive at the Gran Lauson pasture at 2506 m, at the Casotto del Lauson 2588 m and finally at the Vittorio Sella Refuge.
Here at the top you can wander the length and breadth of the valley meeting marmots, chamois and ibex. You can stay overnight at the Refuge and go back the next day and have breakfast with the chamois. If you are motivated you can continue to Lake Lauson where you can see ibexes if you are patient and lucky.
