This is a challenging hike that has it all. The trailhead is in the ancient city of Avdat. For centuries this has been an important stop on the Incense Road between Petra in Jordan and the seaport of Gaza from where goods were regularly shipped to Europe. From Avdat the path serpents through now-dry antique terraces and into the depth of the Negev desert, away from the road and away from any village. Later on, you get to visit two of the most beautiful oases in the desert – the upper and lower Ein Akev. Ein Akev Elion (upper) is clearly indicated in the dryness thanks to the green of trees and bushes that densely grow along the flow. The sight then abruptly ends with the water disappearing underground. Farther down the road, Ein Akev Tachton (lower), known simply as Ein Akev, with its 10m deep pool, is the largest and most striking spring in the Israeli desert. A swim here on a hot day is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. From Ein Akev the path takes you up the highland to a charming stroll in the Zin Valley landscape, there´s even a small Bedouin encampment where you can eat traditional food and have coffee and tea. The hike ends at Midreshet Ben Gurion from where you´re a bus away from Avdat or Beer Sheva. If you are basically fit, you should have no problems hiking from Avdat to Midreshet Ben Gurion. Don´t forget to take plenty of water, though, and of course check the weather. On hot days the little shaded path turns into a steaming hot challenge. Show more
#9 - Singletrek Loop Halokim Didi

Length: 16 mi
Single Halukim is one of the first bicycle treks in the Negev. It has been built over ancient camel roads that have been adjusted and designed especially for mountain bikes. It comprises of stunning desert scenery all while staying close enough to the road. This fact is what gives it its character – its a deep-desert ride that allows a quick return from almost every point. Throughout the trek you get to visit archaeological sites, viewpoints and modern desert agriculture, and if you make it all the way to the end you will be rewarded with the unequal landscape of the Zin valley. The trek is best for cyclers of a medium fitness level who already have experience in riding off-road. It is enjoyable and safe in any season but summer, when except for early morning, any hour is too hot to ride. Don´t forget your helmet and plenty of water, and of course, a bicycle in good condition.Show more
