Hiking

Best hike I’ve done in Ireland. Takes in multiple very high peaks and offers views of carauntoohil that most don’t see. There’s scrambling involved from knocknapeasta to Cruach Mhór. Best to do it on a day when the weather is good. I went up the devils ladder and around to the left, thereby avoiding the marshy bit at the start until the end as I didn’t want to have to start with wet feet. Highly, highly recommended hike.

It’s hard but worth it. Make sure you are prepared and bring water and snacks. The weather can change very fast so bring some water proof clothes and a change in the car. The carpark is €2 and there are bathroom facilities there

Road bikingGreat!

This is a great experience! We cycled from the hotel to Ross Castle, we took the boat (with the bikes) at 10:30, you can get the tickets online or in place, we pay €20. The trip is around 90 minutes. The boat left us in Lord Brandon's Cottage from where you can go back by to Killarney by cycling or walking. The view is beautiful, be ready to climb a very tough hill but after that it's easy and enjoyable.

Do it.....do it now!!! WCGW walk why not. You can do it in 90’mins if you don’t stop every 5 mins to take a photo. Starts gentle / downhill then a short but very steep climb followed by another downhill stretch. Not many people around. Foliage dense as it’s a rain forest so you kind of feel like you could be ambushed at any mo. Creeped me out a tad so would bring a bud next time. Enjoy. Byeeeee

It’s incredibly important to follow the trail meticulously going up the Brother O’Shea’s route, in fact everywhere really. We lost it on the way up and climbed a gully section which was a very bad decision. Thankfully we made it out. I would urge no one else to attempt this. Took the zig zags back down to extend the walk slightly and get the views back across to Carrauntoohil. A beautiful but challenging mountain all in all. The toughest in Ireland I have experienced.

Great trail but not to be underestimated. Took us 6.5 hours and we are fairly fit but not experienced hikers. Download a map and compass- you might need it although the path is mostly fairly obvious. We had bad weather at the top but don’t regret a thing. We went up and down the devils ladder- which was exciting but scary when you are trying to watch 3 kids (12,13,16). Wear hiking boots- I did see people in runners but I would not attempt it in them. Bring layers including a good rain coat. You will need plenty of water

This was a highlight of our time in Ireland. We were there in March and it was honestly a lot harder than anything we’ve done and we’ve hiked 13 Colorado 14ers. The water coming down Devils Ladder was significant and made all the rocks super slippery and mossy. It was snowing at the top but we ate our lunch and it cleared out for a short time and the views were stunning. Getting down Devils Ladder was daunting because it is not only physical but you have to stay mentally sharp because of how wet and slippery it is. I was glad I didn’t see the memorial wall to those who have died until we got back!! This hike is magnificent but no joke. Be prepared.

Starts easy you are thinking no problem I’ll finish this in half the time, until you hit the devils staircase then it steps up a notch. Hard hike make sure you have proper equipment

I hiked this bad boy a couple years ago and went up via Devils Ladder. I did my research prior to visiting Ireland and decided to hire a guide. I’m very glad I did and he was worth every cent! Don’t under estimate the terrain! Be prepared to work for those gorgeous views at the top :)

Had a perfect weather day, with most magnificent views. Thoroughly enjoyed it, can be challenging especially beginning and end, but doable for moderate fitness.

Fab views at the top...trail well defined with rocky steps and sleepers. No sheep or gates. Dogs are allowed on the leash.
