Most challenging hike I've done

The sunrise view is worthy to wake up at 3:30 and start the journey up to the top.
On the way back we went a long road, around crater and it was very nice too.
Gide is highly recommended.

This is an amazing experience of a hike.i had to convince my husband to do this with me as he was not into the idea of waking up at 2 to go hiking, but he was glad I did. I hardly ever take the time to write reviews on here but seeing how few have actually rated this trail, I felt it deserved more than what it has been given. We did the tour just to avoid any complications. I am very glad we did as our tour guide was able to show us an amazing bat cave. The view from the top is so beautiful. It’s an experience you just don’t typically get. We had our breakfast cooked over a steam hole from the volcano and it was amazing how hot the steam was. On our way down we came across a village of monkeys who were not shy at all. They enjoyed everyone’s snacks and would just on your shoulder or head wherever you were. I do want to point out these monkeys were far more friendly than the ones at the monkey forest in Ubud. One of my favorite hikes to this day and I will forever treasure the experience at mt banter

This was the worst experience I have ever had in Indonesia. I strongly suggest finding another mountain to hike. To climb the mountain, you have an option to take a tour. The tour is 375000Rp, which includes breakfast and transportation. However, being an avid hiker, me and my friends decided we do not need help climbing this mountain, and would prefer to do it ourselves. We rented motorbikes and drove to the mountain at 2:00 AM to catch the sunrise. When we got there, we were told by the locals that we had to take a tour. We politely declined, and said we were interested in climbing ourselves. The locals then said that they would kill us if we took another step towards the mountain without taking the tour. We offered to pay 120000Rp (the cost of 4 people taking the tour), but told them we would still like to hike alone. They got offended, and more of them came. We were surrounded by roughly 40 locals, and they all had weapons. They told us to take a tour or go home or get killed.

I would have done the tour, but why am I going to pay someone 300000Rp to walk with me up the mountain after him and his friends just threatened to kill me and my friends?

If you do decide to climb the mountain; please be aware you MUST take a tour for your own safety. These people are not good people, and I will not give them any money.

I walked this twice, once in the evening, and once in the daytime, with no sunscreen. Tip: Put on sunscreen!

This is a fantastic walk along the awesome beach in Bali! Take lots of water, or money to buy a bottle or two along the way.

It was a steep climb (which apparently there are multiple ways to get up)... took a couple of hours and was very cold at the top. It was a great view, but limited due to fog. I would recommend! Oh, and they use steam from the volcano to cook hard boiled eggs. Pretty neat.

did this hike end of june 2016. worth it! must do if you are a hiker. it was definitely challenging, so unless I have my hikes messed up, I would rate it hard, no switchbacks, just straight up :) . We started early am, hiking in the rain and dark until we got above the clouds. The one bummer was that we made good time so we had to wait to do the summit for 30 mins, would have liked to have had another layer, bc we got very cold. we made it to see the sunrise at the summit!

Guide is a must, I wish I could remember our guides name, I will try to find out and edit my post.

Arguably the greatest hike of my life. Not for the hike itself - because we did it in the dead of night and most of the way you're holding vines because of the grade. But we summited at sunrise and it was truly incredible - you can see the entire perimeter of Bali. You have to hire a guide to do this hike. Don't do Batur, it's a tourist walk, this is where it's at.

Completed this hike during the monsoon season. The trail was wet and there was heavy rain. This didn't stop people from hiking or camping on the mountain. Once you arrive you will have to check in at the ranger station and pay for ticket. I didn't see a single ranger on the trail though nor did anyone ask to see my permit. I paid 45$ for mine, since I am a westerner and they charge us more. Once you set off on the trail there is a river that is on your right side and is warm due to the volcanic active. There is also a lot of wild animals including monkeys. There is a point in the trail where you cross a hot spring waterfall and it is incredibly slippery. They do have hand rails to assist you though but the water is pretty hot. When we arrived at the camp ground, it was completely full and over crowded. I took a break and then continued on to Gede. The trail gets pretty steep and will require ropes to help you scramble up. Upon reaching the top there was a group of small stores that sold food and water. It also gets pretty cold at the top due to the elevation. Also, not sure if the stores are there 24/7 or if they arrive based on the willingness of eager opportunist. Once I took my photo and ate I head back down. The total trip took me about 11 hours. This wasn't the best hike I have ever done. I think it was due to the rain and the fact that the trail wasn't taken care of. This include trash and how people treated the area, especially at the camp site.

perfectly great journey. Difficult trek via Grenden Village (new trek) but the view was so amazing

good guide

Plan a 6d5n itinerary to be comfortable and soak in the beautiful sights and sounds. the popular itinerary 3d2n is definitely rushed, tiring and offers what this trail deserves! Good luck!

Amazingly difficult trek to hike (Suwanting Vilage) but very rewarding on the way to summit.
Great view and clean air to breath

The trail was hard, but not as rocky as mount Gede so that's a plus. And the view is worth the journey.
