Was the guide necessary? No. Would you get hassled if you didn't have a guide? ...maybe. Was worth the couple of bucks to not worry. Pleasant walk on a well-maintained trail through a beautiful valley (although the periodic trash burning sites which are *everywhere* on Java were disruptive). The waterfall is AWESOME and you can swim around in the pool below. Very fun side trek from Bromo. Bring watersocks if you got em for climbing over some wet rocks when you get close to the waterfall. Wear swimwear, bring a towel, a poncho and a waterproof phone bag if you want to take pictures (strongly recommend!).

Did this hike 10 years ago, really light traffic. Most people would visit mount Bromo which is nearby, and skip the waterfalls, but you definitely should check it out!

Closed until March 29th due to Coronavirus concerns :(

C'est une randonnée facile. Le paysage est bien surtout quand on se rend au bout au petit café dans les rizières. Sinon rien de trop impressionnant.

Challenging hike, bring gas masks, we hired a guide which made this trip safer and no other guides bothered us with their services. A lot of men work here mining sulfur, which is the reason there is strong smell of it. Need gas masks at the top. We started at 5am, experienced sunrise which was magical. Saw blue flames too. The road is mainly uphill and gravel only. Wear good shoes.

easy beautiful trail

It’s a nice walk but not a must see if time is a crunch. We did the trail in 30 minutes. Again a very nice walk in nature

Bird hill restaurant in Amora Hotel was fire

I took a tour because the transportation was much more expensive than taking a tour. But once arrived, I did the path that I wanted. It is not very difficult but better to come prepared. It is better to have a mask because of the sulfur in the air. Also if it is windy in order that your eyes don't burn, bring a protective glasses. You can rent them as well.

Nice easy work, very accessible from Ubud township. Reasonably exposed so make sure you have sun protection and water with you.

This is a nice walk with some steeper bits but nothing hard. Though there were people on the trail it was a nice respite from the constant scooter cacophony of the town streets. The rice paddies in the upper portions were peaceful and beautiful. Had a fresh mango smoothie at one of the number of small places dotting the trail.

good

A quite unique payoff after a reasonably steep but short climb. The way up is smooth if not a little dusty. The descent into the crater yields the sight and smell of burning sulfur and the blue flame of that. Below is the world’s largest acid lake. Gas mask is essential if you want to get close. It will be a little colder than you expect so would not do this in a t shirt. Best done at night to see the flames best and then ascend to the rim and watch a glorious sunrise.

Easy walk. Doable in flip flops. Fairly busy as well. Some nice cafes/restaurants overlooking rice terraces at the end.

Went on a different route. Got lost at times as path is sometimes hard to find. People sent me the correct way at times. In jungle, through fields. Ended up having to go through a hotel resort to get back onto main road.

Start of trail is very steep though it's paved mostly to the top, then a bit of scramble going down the crater. You will come across lots of miners along the trail.

easy walk but was good to get us acquainted with ubud

Lovely, easy stroll but feels a fair bit harder in the middle of the day. Best around dawn or dusk.

Beautiful walk, initially sharing the road with buzzing scooters. Walking through rural areas with plenty of livestock and locals to see. Virtually no one around after you cross the bridge. Latter part of the walk is moderately challenging with steep slope.
