Done this on 2018Feb07. My first taste of serious hiking . One of the most difficult hike/mountain climb I’ve done. Beautiful sunrise. Good guides.

I did this hike on 2017, we arrived by 10am to the bottom of the volcan, hired a local guide and took us about 7-8 hours to come back. (we are a couple in shape in early 30's) Most of the people do it at night to see the sunrise, but we did it during the day and we had the mountain for us alone!
I recommend this hike only for intermediate-expirences hikers, you have to climb through rocks and cliffs. But the view at the too is really amazing and a lifetime experience!

Phenomenal views from the top at sunrise. I did this hike in November 2016. The hike is done in the middle of the night with a local guide, so you need headlamps and poles. It gets chilly at the top - recommend to bring layers and gloves.

Path is mostly concrete, a mix of large/steep steps and some path for local homes. There's a small portion of dirt trail hiking. There is a lot of up/down involved so the vertical should not be dismissed. The waterfalls it brings you to are beautiful, a long with all the views on the way. Easily worth it!

Most of the guides are excellent and give you local background info. This hike is often crowded, but the views are beautiful. Recommended guides are Bali Trekking Exploration, Mt Batur Sunrise Trekking Company and Bali Tour Activities. They are all good groups with excellent guides. Tip: Be sure to tell your guide you want to include the natural hot springs after your trek. It is well worth it. Also bring a clean change of clothes, even if you don’t do the hot springs.

A lot of whining in this thread about the locals requiring that you take a guide. Get over it. That’s Indonesia. This is their home and when you use a guide service, you help local families and the economy. If you make it to Bali, you can afford it.

Worst experience in Indonesia. I refused to believe what I was hearing from others and reading, but I experienced it for myself. I absolutely refuse to fund the criminal activity occurring at Mt. Batur. There is no fee to enter the site nor is a guide required. A local “mafia” of sorts runs this entire small village. This is confirmed via a visit to the area itself and experiencing it.
When you attempt to hike without a guide, you are physically bullied and harassed by locals. Ultimately, not able to pass as more and more goons come to assist with the multiple types of harassment. Including, but not limited to, being called a “terrorist”, being kicked, being shoved, being spat on. One even kicked my girlfriend - truly unreal.
The best thing you can do for this is to NOT take ANY paid tour. You are directly promoting the criminal activity that is going on here and entitling these criminals to continue their scheme. The stories we heard from locals would astound you, these are not good people!!
Visiting the town is beautiful enough, but for us, hiking to the top is just inaccessible because we refuse to contribute a single penny to the thugs running the village.

Recently did this at Sunrise. Worth the early start with amazing views from the top. Terrain a little difficult at times. A few slips and trips by other walkers.

The sunrise view is worthy to wake up at 3:30 and start the journey up to the top.
On the way back we went a long road, around crater and it was very nice too.
Gide is highly recommended.

This is an amazing experience of a hike.i had to convince my husband to do this with me as he was not into the idea of waking up at 2 to go hiking, but he was glad I did. I hardly ever take the time to write reviews on here but seeing how few have actually rated this trail, I felt it deserved more than what it has been given. We did the tour just to avoid any complications. I am very glad we did as our tour guide was able to show us an amazing bat cave. The view from the top is so beautiful. It’s an experience you just don’t typically get. We had our breakfast cooked over a steam hole from the volcano and it was amazing how hot the steam was. On our way down we came across a village of monkeys who were not shy at all. They enjoyed everyone’s snacks and would just on your shoulder or head wherever you were. I do want to point out these monkeys were far more friendly than the ones at the monkey forest in Ubud. One of my favorite hikes to this day and I will forever treasure the experience at mt banter

This was the worst experience I have ever had in Indonesia. I strongly suggest finding another mountain to hike. To climb the mountain, you have an option to take a tour. The tour is 375000Rp, which includes breakfast and transportation. However, being an avid hiker, me and my friends decided we do not need help climbing this mountain, and would prefer to do it ourselves. We rented motorbikes and drove to the mountain at 2:00 AM to catch the sunrise. When we got there, we were told by the locals that we had to take a tour. We politely declined, and said we were interested in climbing ourselves. The locals then said that they would kill us if we took another step towards the mountain without taking the tour. We offered to pay 120000Rp (the cost of 4 people taking the tour), but told them we would still like to hike alone. They got offended, and more of them came. We were surrounded by roughly 40 locals, and they all had weapons. They told us to take a tour or go home or get killed.

I would have done the tour, but why am I going to pay someone 300000Rp to walk with me up the mountain after him and his friends just threatened to kill me and my friends?

If you do decide to climb the mountain; please be aware you MUST take a tour for your own safety. These people are not good people, and I will not give them any money.

I walked this twice, once in the evening, and once in the daytime, with no sunscreen. Tip: Put on sunscreen!

This is a fantastic walk along the awesome beach in Bali! Take lots of water, or money to buy a bottle or two along the way.

It was a steep climb (which apparently there are multiple ways to get up)... took a couple of hours and was very cold at the top. It was a great view, but limited due to fog. I would recommend! Oh, and they use steam from the volcano to cook hard boiled eggs. Pretty neat.

did this hike end of june 2016. worth it! must do if you are a hiker. it was definitely challenging, so unless I have my hikes messed up, I would rate it hard, no switchbacks, just straight up :) . We started early am, hiking in the rain and dark until we got above the clouds. The one bummer was that we made good time so we had to wait to do the summit for 30 mins, would have liked to have had another layer, bc we got very cold. we made it to see the sunrise at the summit!

Guide is a must, I wish I could remember our guides name, I will try to find out and edit my post.

Arguably the greatest hike of my life. Not for the hike itself - because we did it in the dead of night and most of the way you're holding vines because of the grade. But we summited at sunrise and it was truly incredible - you can see the entire perimeter of Bali. You have to hire a guide to do this hike. Don't do Batur, it's a tourist walk, this is where it's at.
