One of our favourite trails on our round trip through Iceland. Great views over Lake Myvatn from the top of Hversfjell Volcano and spectacular views of the crater. The route leads to the difficult path for the ascend of the volcano, there is also an easier alternative a few hundred meters further to the left. One thing to note: the height profile linked to this hike is not at all representative. I’ll write to AllTrails about that and add a new height profile under photos. Whole trip took us about 2.5 hours, so a bit longer than the initial time.

Nice and easy short walk with lovely views around lake Mývatn and some (pseudo?) craters in the distance, while at the far end you and the other side there's a lovely inner bay where we saw many ducks with multitudes of tiny adorable ducklings.

It was interesting to walk between these big lava formations. However, compared to all the other things/walks to do around Mývatn, this part actually felt a bit boring to be honest. Plus, for Icelandic terms, it seemed quite touristic (and a little busy). I'd say that only the "difficult" light blue path only makes it worth it (I wouldn't call it difficult). It runs in the center, splitting the red path in two. We basically took the other paths (mostly the red path), which were either paved or clearly made by a machine until the farthest end of the blue path, and then took the blue path back towards the parking lot. The blue path was definitely the least traveled, and brought you closer (and up and over) the lava field/towers, with some nice-ish views when you were up high.

Trail is no longer a loop, but it's still worth it! Beautiful!

Did trail in late January. Somewhat tricky of an approach because the trail markers were almost completely buried in the snow (still visible though). We only saw about 12” of snow and the markers were about 18”. If the snow is taller, the markers may be harder to see. Once you start really going up the switchbacks, you will get warm so bring layers that you can shed. Microspikes necessary and gaiters recommended if doing in winter. Fun, fairly easy hike that will take ~2-3 hours depending on how often you stop.

Incredible views from the top. I hiked while visiting from the United States, and it was one of the highlights of the trip.

It took us appr. 2.5 hrs to the top and back. You have a nice view on the top to the lake and craters altough it is super windy.

Amazing trail full of the most basalt formations I've ever seen. Great view of the whole canyon and river as well. Be aware of bugs at the trailhead! Some kind of giant gnat that refuses to get out of your face until you get down the trail a big. My friend took three in the mouth just trying to talk. Also, recommend you go clockwise. Gives you a steady climb to admire the basalt before delivering a great view. Also, the big red hill spur at the end is still closed but you can get close and it's cool to look at.

I recommend this trail to those who like to meet volcanos as it is. Not so big route, but quite enought as a hiking circle trail and spectacular crater.

Loved the trail. Beautiful views on the river and the rock formations from the top. It was very wet and muddy due to rain but on a good day, it would have been the best hike!

We didn't do the loop around the crater, but hiking up a steep volcano slope was quite a strain.
