Attempted this trail 3 days ago, started on the right side of the river as recommended for views however there was too much snow and ice to complete the right ride and get to the top of the falls the trail was lost completely. Ended up hiking back down and hiking along the river through the canyon, many spots where the ice isn’t thick so there’s chance to step through and find your foot in the river. If you want to reach the top start on the left if you do it within the next week or two.

Went there in March in a group of four and the weather was sunny with some clouds. There was a lot of wind so prepare some windbreaker. Difficulty of a hike was moderate with snow all the way to the top and some icy parts so good shoes are recommended. All in all a nice hike with beautiful views.

Great views at the top! In summer this is a moderate hike, winter (with good amount of snow and ice) it becomes slightly more difficult. I did not wear any spikes going up till about the last 300 ft. of gain. Coming down I would for sure recommend them on any slick/snowy/icy areas. Went off trail slightly done to loop not being super visible and following others tracks. Going counterclockwise coming down trail is not as apparent. So either go the same way down or keep an eye out for the cairns marking the trail and have your map downloaded. Good luck!

beautiful in the snow (early Feb) but warning when it's windy it can be quite challenging! views all the way up were amazing. route had clear footprints by noon so was easy to follow. check forecast to avoid heavy winds and rain. would highly recommend.

Good for sunday walk with friends or childrens. Good landscape for other mountains around. Domek historical places on the way and small caves.

Very fun trail! Glad I found it while staying in Reykjavík for vacation. Don’t be surprised if you don’t make it up the primary incline. Its quite steep and definitely not your average hike. Beautiful views the entire way. I would recommend to think twice about this trail unless you have experience on sustained steep trails and walking on snowpack

I had a great time on this trail! I did by accident walk down the wrong path back down and got really confused. Then a cloud came and encapsulated us in Fog. I had to go back to the top and try again. There was an ATV 4X4 trail (to the right of the parking) (left going down the peak) that was much easier so I went down that trail instead of the one listed here. Google maps satellite view helped me find my way down. Its a great hike with great views! When the fog came I was scared since I couldn’t see in the distance. Just a warning for other visitors!

Definitely worth taking the short ferry to see the island. I saw some seals sun bathing on the coast and the walk is very accessible.

awesome trail with mesmerizing views. River crossing can be cold during the fall months (crossed oct.10th), make sure to bring a towel to dry off feet and water shoes if possible as rocks are slippery and jagged. I dont suggest you cross with your hiking shoes as you'll need to keep your feet warm and dry after crossing. Make sure to choose shallow areas, spots we choose never went above the knee. It's not an easy task but the view on the right side is worth it. Highly suggest you start on the left side as the trail is marked clearly-ish and head down on the right side (1st crossing will be at top of falls, 2nd would be where the log would be) as the trail is not marked clearly and it's easier to identify it going down then up. it took us a total of 4 hours to do the loop with stopping for photos.

Nice short tour of the city.

Great hill for beginners Great view from top

Terrible hike! Prepare for disappointment if you hike on the left side! Clearly the hike is meant to be viewed from the right side. No good views on the left. Unfortunately, the only way to get on the right side is to cross a river with a log and wire which was not available at the time we went (Oct 4). Furthermore, if you follow All Trails suggestion and hike the left side, it will suggest a closed route that is severely overgrown with foliage, dense bush, and loose rocks. I can see the potential however, and would love to do the hike over again but on the other side of the gorge.

Best hike I’ve ever been on!!! We went on September 28th and the weather was perfect but of course super windy. I am not scared of heights really but a few of the views made my heart skip a beat- absolutely worth it though. The first water crossing was fine, the log and wire were helpful. We did the 2nd water crossing and probably should have gone a little further down the river to do it- but it worked out fine, water was about knee high. The hike back down is easy so we just kept our wet boots on. 10/10 recommend this hike- best part of our trip!!!

Busy, but an interesting and scenic walk through Icelandic history.
