Aloha! I typically hike up 1-3 days a week and have been doing so almost 3 years now. Went up a few times last week and last weekend as well. I will be going up again this Friday the 22nd and this weekend on the 23rd/24th. I have done this particular hike more than most on island. (over 140+ times) The hike can be muddy and or rainy but we never have any issues as I always provide the proper gear (including microspikes) when we go. Make sure to bring plenty of water and food for this hike and other hikes out here in Hawaii. Feel free to reach out to me on instagram mike.karas or via email at mikekarasphotography@gmail.com.

This is an epic hike, specially taking the legal back way. I go up almost every weekend. Conditions were near perfect last Saturday, I will be going up this Saturday March 23rd, March 31st and April 6th. It can get pretty muddy and windy. Crampons(spikes) recommended, I do have some spare spikes.

This is definitely a “difficult” hike due to the steepness of the trail. Most of the trail is on the abandon rail line up to the summit. For about 20 or so feet, there is a 8-10 foot open drop below the trail/bridge. If you stay to the right on the way up and keep looking ahead, it will not be an issue. Two thirds of the way up, it gets increasingly steep leaving you sweating and breathing very heavily.... After you reach the top of the tracks, stay to the right to climb to the peak. A tough climb but you will be rewarded by amazing 360 degree views from the top.

We hiked it in the late afternoon - a moderate crowd of hikers were going both up and down. We were able to catch the beginning of the sunset as we worked our way down the rail/trail.

Beautiful scenery, pretty waterfall at end. Nice very easy hike - lots of young families with little kids. It was way overcrowded the day we went and felt like I was in a line the entire time. What could have been a quick 30 minutes took over an hour. Go early!!! I prefer something more lightly traveled. If you want an easy hike with a family, this is perfect for that!

Anybody doing this trail today got room for another? My last full day on the island and hear this is the best one!

The trail was nice! So worth it. Did not like dogs on the trail even though it says no dogs.

My Husband and I took our kids (10 and 12) this morning for a sunrise hike. We parked in the residential area as the park gates don’t open until 6:30am. We were walking toward the trail head by 5:30am. My kids were surprised by the number of cats that hangout in the park at that time of the morning. We probably saw 10 , I assume feral, cats. The hike was tough but had only one sketchy section where the track was above a 8-10 foot open area. We were all sweating buckets and were great-full for the cool morning air. The trail wasn’t too busy at this time will maybe 10 other people at the top. We took some pictures, enjoyed the view, then headed down to beat the crowds now coming up.

Trailhead is off of Alani Drive, not wherever Google Maps currently has it pinned. Approachable hike that’s mostly covered. No real mud except for in a 10-foot stretch that was easily avoided, though it was a little slick on the way down. There are a couple of spots with notable inclines, but they’re very manageable, especially with poles. Be sure to go past the first green plateau, though there’s a beautiful view there, too. Very pretty green panorama if the sun’s out.

Hi all, Planning to do this hike in a few days on March 20, 2019. I read there are river crossings. Is the current low enough to keep dry? Anything else to be aware of? We plan to start at 7am.

Start early. No shade.

This is a very nice somewhat paved hike. Good for kids I would say 3 and up because at the end there is a steep climb down to get to the waterfalls and if it is muddy which almost always is, it is tough to carry kids down (although I have done it with babies).

The entrance is straight down the road past the two houses on the left after the wooden bridge. It is NOT the fence on the right that goes uphill and it is NOT the gate on the right that Goes uphill.

All of the other reviews are accurate, travel down the paved/gravel road and when it stops look to the right and it is a steep but short climb down to falls. The ropes are pretty sturdy and there are ropes to climb up the falls and u can jump.

The view from the top is one of my favorites on the island. It’s short, not super hard for most people. You will be on your hands and knees scrambling up. Going down is harder than going up! Park across the street at Kahana and be careful of the traffic.

I LOVE this hike. It is difficult in some places as it is a little steep and muddy. Go on a dry day. The change in scenery is spectacular. Most of the trail was easy for me and I’m a little chubby and out of shape. The difficult parts were difficult, but nothing too strenuous. Worth it!

This is HARD. I wanted to die within about 20 minutes. Do this trail EARLY in the morning or as the sun sets. The view is so worth it and you’ll be proud of yourself for finishing.

The early parts of this trail are fairly well maintained and an easy uphill hike to the first landing. Turn left and cross the stream bed (was dry) to reach the clearing, where you’ll turn right to go up mountain along the bank of another stream bed (also dry). Where the second stream bed begins at a rock face you cross and begin ascending to get to the ridge. A few switchbacks take you from more tropical flora up to a pine forest. When the path gets flatter on top of the ridge turn right again up mountain to continue ascending, following the pink flags along the way and going up to the right at the Y. A moderate uphill climb quickly turns into a steep climb with ropes to grab onto for support. The path here got much steeper and with the bed of slippery pine needles and our tired legs this is where we stopped for the day. The way back down the steep pine needle covered ground was difficult to keep our footing and required a bit of scooting/sliding to get down safely. Definitely a challenging hike to go all the way up but could still be a fun adventure to stay down below to climb around the banks and stream beds for bouldering or to just chill in the pine forest on the lower part of the ridge. Great area though, cool and shady and we will definitely go again!

Thank you Eryk -if I had not read your review I would have kept hiking on the stone path. I loved this hike in the forest and finding a waterfall. There is a gradual incline but this should not be too much of an issue for most of you. The hike begins at the Far side Opposite the church and is not marked. 3 minutes into your hime you will see a large metal drum with graffiti- the path starts on your left right before the drum.

we couldn't find a entrance so started from Making vally trail. it's just nice incline and down, forest view, easy hike. found out the entrance was just behind the guardrail with the sign lol. there is a small parking spot near by too.

Plants were super over grown, we had to go over couple big tree fell down. we had to go with breaking huge spider webs many times. There were dead leaf everywhere and bugs. It's abandoned for a long time.

This hike was such an adventure! The elevation isn't terrible - giving it a moderate rating I'd say is accurate. However, the terrain is quite challenging. A large portion of the trail is large boulders to climb over. Many large roots to navigate as well. I recommend good hiking shoes or boots. The trail is marked with survey ribbon. At the fork, go left to go directly to the falls or right to go down stream. It's connected so you'll end up at the falls either way. Overall the trail is worth the work!

Visiting from Seattle, WA. Nice short hike for out of towners to get some forest exposure. Took a 4 1/2 and 6 year old. Found it to be very straight forward of a hike, not sure why people are getting lost. There are some junctions, but if you follow the path of the river it is going to take you to the falls. . Trail was in good condition, muddy sections that are easy to find a path around on the edges Wish people wouldn’t leave their trash, shoes, and dog shit bags all over the trails, seems to be a problem everywhere. I would rate it as easy on a dry day, moderate overall, hard after a rain only because it would be slick and muddy.

FAULTY ANCHOR ON THE BACK SIDE OF 3RD PEAK!!! Please backtrack the way you came and do not continue past the 3rd peak. Otherwise this hike is spectacular.

Super short but just right. I would recommend this trail for those who can’t hike much but still want to get the taste of Hawaii. If it’s raining you’ll definitely be walking through mud but it stays pretty muddy. Parking at the church and still a view up top. Takes about 20 minutes round trip.
