Aloha! I typically hike up 1-3 days a week and have been doing so almost 3 years now. Went up a few times last week and this past weekend. I will be going up again tomorrow on Tuesday and this weekend on the 27/28th as well. Possibly other days during the week too. I have done this particular hike more than most on island. (over 140+ times) The hike can be muddy and or rainy but we never have any issues as I always provide the proper gear (including microspikes) when we go. Make sure to bring plenty of water and food for this hike and other hikes out here in Hawaii. Feel free to reach out to me on instagram mike.karas or via email at mikekarasphotography@gmail.com

This is an epic hike, specially taking the legal back way. I go up every weekend. Conditions were great last weekend. It can get pretty muddy and windy. Crampons(spikes) recommended, I do have some spare spikes.

Nice garden and you can learn a lot from. In terms of view, gneh!

Very nice hike with amazing view!

The police came and gave us a ticket about 15 minutes from the top. It was a helicopter dropping officers on the actual platforms and walking between them to give tickets. Its totally not worth it. One of the people in my group has a US medical license, and I haven't gotten my green card yet, so I don't know what will happen. We have found a lawyer to represent us, but we are terrified and this is the most horrible thing that could have happened to us on vacation. I would recommend thinking about it really well. The views were great, but it doesn't make this okay.

A police helicopter dropped three officers at the top and two at the first platform and ticketed my whole group. It was not worth it. We came from Moanalua Valley Trail and went down the stairs a bit to take photos when they came. We tried to hide inside the first house, but one of them walked from the top down. I am in the middle of getting my green card and at this point I am basically screwed.

Not too much new info to share. Muddy, yes, slippery, yes, beautiful, yes. Difficult for those out of shape. I’m no hiker and survived. We had some older people in our group and everyone made it unscathed.

Nice little exercise, especially during mid day when the sun is really beaming down. Great view at the top, but expect to fight through a big crowd. Would definitely recommend, though. It’s short and sweet.

Loved this hike ! would rate it moderate. saw many people doing it with babys strapped to them and some young children and a few dogs. Very steep climb at the start for the first few minutes. We went to the 2nd Pillbox, definitely worth the view. it was amazing ! We went at 9am and it wasnt super busy. As we were leaving there were so many people trying to take pictures all close together of the view. so I would say go before 10am. I would imagine this hike to be fairly rough on bad knees. We were fine without any water. Nice place to sit up at the top and eat a snack while enjoying the views . I would do this hike again and will reccomend it to any of my friends and family heading to Hawaii.

The best part was the forest views at the very start of the trail. If you've done other waterfall hikes before, this waterfall wasnt anything special. Lots of roots to step over but very easy hike. Saw lots of small children falling , but fine for mobile adults. Took us 45 minutes round trip and we were slowed down by slow walking people. The trail isnt very wide in most parts. If you havent seen waterfalls before, it's worth the trek :)

navigate hike pretty easy to follow the trail just make sure that you stay along the Riverside and follow the pink markers.

Parked off site. Two hours to hike to the trail, complete the hike, and make it back to the car. Fantastic views from the top

Short, sweet and steep. Went up this morning to catch the sunrise. Amazing experience. If you’re in Oahu, this needs to be on your list at some point. Any time of day will do, but sunrise can’t be beat.

Great trail, if you are fit this is really fun. Great views and safe hike. Did the hike in 1 hour but stayed on top for 30 minutes to take pictures. Went earlier 5:30 AM, almost no one.

This is a decent trail if you really want to get a good workout. Some nice views as well. Ok to do alone because there is no chance of getting lost or going off trail because it is a clear path. I love a good muddy hike, but near the top it becomes very difficult to go up and down due to the muddy terrain. I also like that you don’t need to park on the street...there are designated parking spots. I would recommend for locals looking for a bit of exercise, but if you are only here for a week or so, I’d skip it and do a prettier hike like Kuliouou.

Was definitely expecting this to take longer and be more difficult. It was an easy walk. We were only sweating because of the heat. Most people in the reviews say there was no shade, but we went later in the day around 3pm and there was many spots along the route with shade to cool in for a minute! And it wasnt busy at that time either. The view was beautiful! We didnt bring any water up with us, and we were fine without it. The pineapple whip ice cream at the bottom was a great way to finish off at Diamond Head.

Great trail. kid friendly my five year old son did it. Beautiful lookout view right before the fall which was strong today

I’ve climbed this trail twice now. Once in January 2018 when we got caught in a rainstorm along the way and the trail was a waterfall and today when it was fairly dry and with overcast skies. It ended up being perfect conditions for the hike. I much preferred dry and overcast. Nevertheless it’s a grinder of a ridge trail with lots of ups and downs and ups and downs then downs and ups along the way. Great sweeping vistas of Honolulu, Diamond Head and Ka’au Crater and the Windward Side once you reach the Ko’olau Summit Trail. All in all a good mix of exercise, scenery, and wildlife along the way.

Not Avery long hike but steep and well worthwhile. Beautiful views, well maintained and fun to do. Not much shade, fill up your water bottles before you head up. Enjoy!
