Great trail if you’re looking for a quick hike - probably takes ~30 minutes to get to the top. It does get pretty muddy, so it may be best to avoid after recent rain.

Loved this trail!! Was beautiful not too bad to get to the top! Perfect for kids. If you have a kid in the pack, I would keep them in it for at least most of the uphill trek, there’s a part that they can get down and walk as it’s safe in my opinion (wife trail and flat) but then coming down I’d put them back in. Some parts are pretty muddy but not too bad, there’s plenty of spots to put your feet and grab a hold of something should it be slippery. Totally with it as the views of the north shore were amazing!!

Trailhead to the left just before the school parking lot. Lots of parking by the Park before the school or on the main road. Seems very safe to leave the car. First 300 meters muddy and steep. Some wooden steps and a bit of handrail rope. On the top go left. The beginning of the “loop” is about 100meters. Staying left brings you to the WWII bunker about 500 meters further. This is really the only spot for a view of the beach/ocean. The rest of the “loop” is in the woods, mostly flat and dry. It’s a rats nest of trails though and easy to get lost but the dotted lines on the AllTrails map are very accurate. Bring a GPS or compass.

Great hike, good variety once you’re off the road (which was still really pretty with some beautiful views). We took the loop to the right all the way up the fire road, and missed the turn off to the more jungle-esque portion of the hike, which added a bit more mileage. Overall wasn’t too muddy, but definitely some fallen trees you had to go around. Tons of fun overall!

First off: this is more of a “walk” than a “hike.” That being said - this one is GREAT for families, especially with small children/strollers, seniors and when you have friends & family visiting. The trail is paved pretty much the entire way. There is a reduced admission fee for military, children, and kama’aina. Check their website for details. This is a family favorite because of the cultural sites and demonstrations along the way, the ease of getting to a beautiful waterfall, and the life jackets/lifeguards staffed at the waterfall that allow you to swim the base of the falls for no additional fee (this is included in your entrance fee to the park.) Truly a “something for everyone” experience and something I recommend on the top 10 things to do to all our visiting friends and family so that they get the experience of seeing a great waterfall without a strenuous, muddy, slippery, off-road hike. This waterfall is located on the North Shore of Oahu, directly across from Waimea Bay. The rainy season here is in the winter months: mostly between Dec-Feb. I recommend going to Waimea Falls after a heavy rainfall or several days of rain because you’ll get the full, abundant waterfall - but without the muddy/slippery conditions you’d battle on the other unpaved trails in the mountains. (Unless you’re into that sort of thing, and want the challenge - then there are dozens and dozens more like trails like that on Oahu!) Notes: NO drones are allowed in the park. There is a snack bar, changing station and bathroom once you get to the falls, as well as seating for family member who do not want to swim the falls. Waimea Valley is a heavily forested nature preserve, so I would strongly recommend a deep woods bug spray on this trail so that you can enjoy the bounty of nature you’ll experience here, without the pestilence of mosquitoes in your nostrils. Since parking is included with your admission to the park, if you go early enough in the day to do the falls and hike back out, you already have parking and are just across the street from Waimea Bay - it may be worth it to just make a day of it and walk on down to the beach while you’re there, without fighting the parking battle you normally would at Waimea Bay. Enjoy! iG: @steph_biddy

Nice for families but not adrenaline junkies.

This is normally by far one of my favorite hikes. Cool entrance, not busy and the lookout is amazing. Buuuut we managed to get here during a week of rain. A little slippery and challenging but definitely an interesting fun hike. Don’t hike when wet. All other times it’s perfect.

Good easy to moderate hike. Bring hiking shoes and a walking stick or poles for the muddy, slippery parts. View is worth is, although not spectacular.

I definitely would agree that it’s an easy hike if it had been dry. Unfortunately it’s been raining a lot so it was super muddy. My daughter and I both almost fell several times on the way back down the steep part. Reading the reviews helped us find the second pillbox pretty easily.

As mentioned it is a muddy climb to the picnic table then easy walking to the first pillbox I found the second also easy to find. Then I explored some of the other trails which where all nice and easy going.

Happy new year!!! Love this trail. After the big Christmas storm a bunch of trees are down in the wooded portion of this trail. Be careful. Still super fun.
