limited shade and pretty muddy trail. The coastal views are amazing!

Great hike when you would love to be exhilarated for half a day. Beautiful views the entire way, and you cannot beat that Ko’olau summit. Great for solo hiking as it is strenuous but not dangerous

This is kind of a weird trail as it is paved, then super duper maintained, then you immediately get to a few hundred stairs pocketed with short level walks. I would not call this a hard trail, just a good way to get a nice sweat, although it is a bit more crowded than what I usually like. I did the entire thing in three hours including taking a short jaunt down the Ko’olau range to the right. Love those quickie heart-beaters sometimes.

Loved this hike. One of my favourites on Oahu because of the ever changing scenery around you. Did it in 2:40 hrs in good weather, including a small hike from the hard to find parking spot (0.5 miles) and short break midway and on the top. First bit is pretty easy, but after the picknick table it goes steep uphill mostly with large muddy (but good maintained) steps. View is outstanding. Whole trail is pretty cool and shady but bring plenty of water.

this is my family's new favorite hike!! besides the INCREDIBLE and breathtaking finaly view at the top of the ridge, the many different terrains along the way was the coolest thing to experience! Our 12 year old son loved this hike. It perfectly kicked our butts and wore us out.. Everything about the hike was awesome! We can't wait to do it again!

Great view at the top! Could see the Eastern edge of Waikiki to MCB K-Bay. Not a technical hike, but a physically demanding 1900’ elevation gain from our car in ~2.7 miles made for some good exercise. Almost 100% shade the entire trail kept us relatively cool. The trail itself is well-trafficked and covered with roots and rocks. Parking is difficult to find...which added an additional 200’ in unplanned elevation gain.

Absolutely loved this hike! Got a little bit from all the best trails: some pine forest miles, some jungle, some mud, some stairs, a nice ridge and a beautiful view! We started around 8:30am and it took us about 5 hours including the walk from and to the bus (30 min. each way) and a couple of breaks during the hike. We went after weeks with lots of rain but only the stairs-part was a bit muddy but nothing too bad. You start by zig-zagging up on the side of the mountain - a pretty descent walk. Then you get to a picnic table and from there it begins to get a little steeper. Though roots help you a lot of the way and once you start to get a view, you’ll find the stairs that will lead you to the top. It does have shade along the trail, but bring sunscreen and definitely water and mosquito deterrent. Photos on: @maleneroennest Instagram

Make sure you always have a plan and you come prepared. As we reached the trailhead we were greeted by fire department personnel and rescue/search helicopters flying overhead. A hiker has been missing since last night. I mentioned to the fire department folks that I had a tourniquet and a knife in my camelbak and that I’d keep a lookout. Apparently she only had a bottle of water and no phone, and her group somehow got separated from her and LEFT her. I’m sure more details will come out, but bottom line, be responsible and be prepared.

Probably one of the better hikes on Oahu, although the trail is a dirt road used by four-wheelers. It's a good mix of sunny and shady stretches, with great views along both sides of the island (including all the way to Haleiwa). Based on the map, I thought this trail would be a grueling up and downhill battle, but it's a pleasant, yet challenging terrain. Bring water and maybe some bug spray (there were lots of fruit flies and a few mosquito spots). We did stop and turn-around before the climb up to Peacock Flats.

Great loop full of beautiful transitions between tropical foliage and fruits to wet and streams to drier shaded pine forests. Lovely views at top. Dog friendly and kids doable. Some mud and bugs in various spots. Really enjoyed this hike.

Trail is the most open trail so far. Cut back and easy to see ahead. Some gd views. Had all conditions, high humidity after this mornings thunderstorms, clouds after summiting and heat on the way up. Descent, it chucked it down, trail became a waterfall. Great contrast. Cleaned up at the local beach. Great feed at Kona brewing co afterwards. Last one for these kiwis b4 leaving tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for info, postings and tips.

Beautiful views of both side of the island on a clear day! Well-maintained and the only "hard" part was maybe a bit of a rope climb near the top. But definitely more of a moderate trail. Rotting fruit created a feasting ground for bugs on the first 1/3... So wave your arms around like a party and all will be fine. Muddy slippery trail, definitely watch your step on the descent. Easy pace, took pictures, looked at mushrooms, picnic at the top and we still made it round trip in about 4.5 hours.
