#1 - Waihe'e Ridge Trail

Length: 3.9 mi • Est. 2 h 38 m
Hiking the Waihee ridgeline up in the Maui mountains is dramatic and always scenic. This hike in West Maui Forest Reserve promises lush scenery, great valley views and some dramatic ridge-line hiking. A well groomed ridge trail suitable for trail runners and hikers of all skill levels. Elevation gains by clean switch-backs and stairs spaced apart by spots of flat terrain. Good views available if hiking on a clear day but expect moderate sun exposure. As on the windward side of all Hawaiian islands, you're more likely to be in for wet weather and muddy conditions. But it's not all that bad, since this means waterfalls are plentiful, the vegetation is greener and the cooler conditions make for a nice comfortable hike.Show more

The Iao Tableland Trail (aka Iao Valley Secret Trail) is behind the lookout point. You have to jump over the fence into a protected watershed and follow a faint trail towards the back wall of the valley. (Please be mindful and stay on trail). At the end of this trail, you can see the wall of tears (dry), the surrounding mountains and a sliver of Wailuku town. It is not an official trail. Show more

Directions from Wailuku: Both trail heads are accessible from Honoapiilani Highway (30). The eastern trail head lies 2.5 miles south of Wailuku Town via an unimproved road adjacent to the junction of Kuihelani Highway (380) and Kihei Road (31). Hikers should arrange to be dropped at the end of the un-improved road as there are no parking facilities and the land is privately owned. The western trail head lies 10 miles south of Lahaina and 3 miles west of Maalaea Harbor. The parking area is accessible from Highway 30 at Manawaipueo Gulch about 0.25 mile north of the Pali tunnel.Show more
