Completed 11/7/20 Park is closed but a handful of people parking at the closed gate and walking into the park to hike. Secret hike was great! Very muddy, lots of bushwhacking, but very worth it. Definitely recommend shoes/boots and bring water. Worth the trip to the top.

Definitely a steep trail, especially in the beginning. Really rewarding view of the coastline at the top! Make sure to wear proper shoes.

Starting to get overgrown. Not a bad idea to bring a machete. Some of the lower plants are scratchy on your leg. There are pretty much always muddy sections given iao is a wet place on Maui. Wear shoes you don’t care about being muddy. Great view

Very cool hike! Didn't take too long and had some breathtaking views. The hardest part is finding your way in. A lot of people have been vague so here's my best shot at explaining it: You drive to the Iao Valley State Park, but there's a closed gate blocking the road for the last half mile. Step over the gate, then another, and now you're at the state park. Walk toward the back of the asphalt loop (you can see this loop in Google Maps), and there's a paved path. Follow the stairs and the paved path up as high as you can. You'll reach a little covered viewpoint that has a great view of the Iao Needle. There's a sign here that says Area Closed, Do not go beyond this sign. Go beyond it. Duck under the railing and stroll up the narrow dirt path. There is a fork in the "road" near a very large tree where we stayed right, keeping the Needle on our right and mostly in view. You eventually get to some very slippery rocks - if it rained recently, be careful - and toward the top you'll see an opportunity to climb a bit up. The climb is a little sketchy and you might get a bit muddy, but it's fairly easy for a mildly out of shape computer geek like myself. Now you're at the top of this ridge! Congrats! Some people said they pushed through some very thick brush to walk along other ridges, but we turned around here. We had probably walked a mile since ducking the railing.

5-star park 1-star 'hike' Kepaniwai is a really nice park with a variety of gardens (Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, etc), as well as a few statues and monuments. It's a lovely park just outside the entrance to the Lao Valley State Monument Park - I highly recommend stopping by as you leave the Lao Valley. But I agree with others - this is not a hike or even a walk, it's just a lovely park.

Road is closed but after a certain time in the day everyone just walks past the closed gate. Beautiful views, but some bushwhacking towards the end.

This trail was a good early morning/ early afternoon hike, but I would not suggest for kids under about 7, or those who aren’t pretty comfortable with hiking. If you’re not good with your footing this probably isn’t the hike for you. There are many stream crossings, we were able to do them without getting our shoes wet. However I assume due to COVID and Maui being closed to tourists for so long the trail was really overgrown and made the narrow trails along the streams edge even more narrow. I wouldn’t even want to attempt this if it had rained the day before. We hit some slippery patches and it hadn’t rained in awhile. Over all good trial. There is two ending points we couldn’t make it to the main ending point because the trail was too hard for everyone in our party. But the second place finish was still pretty and well worth it.

Any tips on finding the trail head? Went out today, but there's a lot of different paths. Wasnt sure which one, but hiked for a mile and the wrong trail ended at the creek bed and we had to turn around.

HikingGreat!

Parking was good. Went around 10am and it was a clear nice day. Perfect weather, not too many people around due to covid. Passed a few people but not crowded first smaller pool was empty and the second larger pool we were there with another small group. Beautiful scenery, not hot, not cold, perfect amount of sun and shade. In and out in 3 hours and we swam at both pools. Follow paths that look more traveled will take you to where you need to go. Tennis shoes are good but water shoes would be best!

Others said bring water shoes but when I went you could pretty well walk across rocks without getting wet. It was a lot of fun but sometimes a little confusing since the trail isn't always super obvious. Quite a good morning hike :)
