Go early. No shade and full exposure so getting there at sunrise is key. Such a beautiful way to see the light come up. Epic views and interesting volcanic rock

Hiking

1. Go in the early morning so as to not be too hot and enjoy the open skies prior to the clouds rolling in for mid morning/ afternoon showers 2. Be aware that the entrance is steep and can have various challenges since free range cattle cross frequently. 3. Enjoy the beauty that is Hawai'i this trail provides. Truly this, the Haleakala Crater hike, and the Hana Bamboo Forrest were my favorite hikes while in Maui, but I still have so much more to explore

Awesome trail with great view to the ocean and valley. Quite muddy and slippery at some steep parts but totally worth it!

Great views. Brown Red blue color scenery. Turbines in the end. Good for watching sunsets if you are okay with night hiking. We managed pretty well with phone lights

Beautiful hike! You go through the forest for the first bit, come to a nice look out a bit before halfway, and then the rest of the hike is mostly out in the open along the ridge. It was foggy at the top but it was still nice. Definitely muddy! We slipped a couple of times.

Highly recommend hiking boots for this one - the trail is very muddy and slippery towards the end, which combined with the steep grade makes for a fall hazard. It was unfortunately very cloudy during our hike so the views were not clear, but I’m sure they are amazing on a clear day!

2.2 miles to the platform at the top from the parking lot. I’d rate the relatively rapid altitude change as strenuous not brutal but you’ll definitely be stopping to catch your breath in places. Take a snack and enjoy it at the end of the trail at one of the picnic tables on the lookout platform. Hiking boots aren’t a necessity but footwear with aggressive tread is. You’ll encounter some slippery spots on the trail that are more problematic coming down than going up. Overall this was a great trail for scenic views of the coast as well as a good cardio workout.

It was extremely windy (makes sense, given the wind turbines), but it felt a bit unsafe at times. The views at the top were not that impressive. If your goal is a challenging hike you will enjoy this. If your goal is gorgeous views, you only need to the first half mile, and the rest of the hike is not worth it.

Great workout. Try starting the hike earlier in the day otherwise the heat would be the biggest challenge and not the hike itself. The heat in my case made me grateful for the bits of cloud cover that I’d get occasionally. Carry 2-3 liters of water per person.

Amazing! It was overcast today so exceptionally cool and refreshing. Saw some giant rainbows far away. A few slippery patches that would be more slippery after rain.

HikingGreat!

For just a four-mile hike, I was surprised how strenuous the ascent was, even after reading the comments. We hiked in the afternoon, so the upper half of the hike was soaked in a tropical cloud, which was cool, damp, and enchanting, although clear views from the top would have been epic. A memorable hike; I'm tempted to return on a cloudless morning.

Poor visibility today but still a fun hike. On a clear day, this is a 5 star hike!! Today it didn’t have the views and was slippery coming down.

HikingNo shadeRocky

This is not a good hike. Compared to other hikes you can do on Maui, this should be at the bottom of your list! Some info/suggestions about this hike if you want to do it anyway: - I’ve done it from both trailheads and would recommend going up from the one closer to Lahaina and then down that one too. The trail closer to Wailuku has nothing to recommend it as the trail is worse, the view is worse, and I think it’s also longer. - As others have said, it’s very hot (zero shade) and steep so keep that in mind and maybe go early in the morning (though I’ve gone midday and it was fine). - The windmills are pretty cool though.
