HikingGreat!

Nice moderate trail. Took us just about 2 hours for the entire loop (6.1 mile) but we jogged a little. Nice mid-day or afternoon hike with lots of shade. No sunscreen needed. Walk for about 10 min before the start of the loop. You can go either right or left and just follow the red arrows for hikers. You will see blue arrows for a shorter hike. Keep in mind you will run into a few bikers.

Great walk. Beautiful views when the clouds are high enough. Can be rather wet when the clouds are all around you.

The trail was nice but not as scenic along the way. It was basically a fire road until the grass section. It would’ve been nice to have a map at the base as well, because once up there, there seemed to be a few trail options, and I would love to know where they lead! Even so, there was definitely an amazing 360 view at the top!

Great trail but it is more like 10.5 miles to complete the perimeter. Many new trails have been cut since this was created, so it is very easy to get lost. Beautifully shaded and non-technical. Elevation was measured at only 1,300 feet, so a very easy hike.

Gorgeous, quiet and serene walk in unsurpassed beauty. Wish there were more markers and maps showing your location. But it’s an awesome hike in God’s outdoors.

Completely forest, no scenic view, moderate incline. This place is cool because there are lots of trails, especially for biking

The only reason for the rating is because of the inaccuracy of listing this trail for public access. The loop trail is absolutely 5 stars. I just want to point out that this trail in the reviews are actually for the “Pu’u O’o short loop trail”. The entire trail mapped here (approx 15 mi, one way, in and out type of trail) is not a public access trail and crosses over multiple conservation areas of different jurisdictions. It goes from Saddle Rd nearly to Volcano. This is a historical trail route with some portions likely not marked any longer. See the “Pu’u O’o short loop trail” description for a more accurate map of the public access route (approx 7.5mi loop, which is fantastic and one of my favorites).

Hiking

Hike with diverse landscapes that leads you through lava fields and forested sections. Nice and cool especially in the summer. Be sure to start early as foggy clouds usually roll in after 11am. If it is very foggy portions of the trail are hard to navigate. The old 4x4 road on the way back is not that inspiring, but offers an easy return path to the highway.

Nature tripsGreat!No shadeRocky

Loved it overall, but not quite what I expected. The first part of the “trail” is actually an old paved road up to an abandoned cinder block building where the cows come to drink. But the birds were plentiful, the weather cooperative and the trails through the meadows at the top were some of the most peaceful grasslands I’ve ever enjoyed in my life. We saw owls and feral pigs as well as sheep, goats and cows. Well worth the trip!

Nice hike. Prone to get very muddy. If at all possible try to time for a day where it did not rain much before (not common understandably). When drier, this is a gem without beautiful greenery.

Did this hike a couple years ago - one of my favorites in Kauai!! And we hiked most of the island. Soo much green! Felt like we were starring in Jurassic Park

New favorite hike! It’s a pretty mellow trail, with cool weather and even cooler views. A lot of sheep and cows around, but not a lot of people today :)
