Beautiful hike with beautiful scenery. Recommend the in and out from the top for a good workout. Went down after sunrise and did a 12 mile loop around a central crater to Kapalaoa cabin. Nice to stop there for lunch and then back to top. Can see some wildlife around the cabin. Beautiful scenery!

After watching the sun rise we hiked down at 6:30am. We did a 6 hour loops down to the bottom, around to the cabin and back up. Stopped at the cabin and had lunch. Beautiful and long but worth it. Spectacular views at every turn.

Great trail for the dogs and I run down the second half of the loop. You have multiple options for making the hike a little shorter if you don’t want to invest the full 2-2.5 hours.

A beautiful trail rich in diversity. You will cross lava fields as well as lush rainforests. Lots of colourful flowers and birds to see too. The trail is well marked, however, sometimes it can be tricky to follow the rock cairns across the lava. Be sure to start early as clouds usually start to roll in late morning with lots of misty fog and rain.

It is a wonderful trail to hike at any time, but especially good option for activity in the middle of the day when it is hot. The trail is almost completely in shade.

Really beautiful trail with amazing viewpoints all along the way. It was muddy but not slippery and well cleared for the majority. Nice gradual incline, more of an easy than moderate grade. Would happily walk this trail again!

THE TRAIL LENGTH IS INCORRECT!! There is a bridge at (22.089,-159.413) with a sign that reads: "End of Kuilau Trail Moalepe Trail Starts Beyond This Sign" The trail is about 3.5 miles round-trip (from paved road to sign). Significantly inaccurate info is a staple of AllTrails, but they never correct things even if you repeatedly ask them to edited something. The person recording walked wayyyy past the bridge. The trail is great, though! I hiked late afternoon. No rain or clouds. It's actually a dirt road which makes it surprisingly more enjoyable because it greatly opens up the trail for a leisurely hike. I did the Napali Coast Trail and the Awaawapuhi Trail... and I enjoyed this one just as much! This one isn't as stunning, but the whole hike is enjoyable, quiet, peaceful, and still has some "wow" overlooks past the picnic tables. Whereas Napali Coast is just brutal & miserable most of the time (in a good way). And Awaawapuhi is borrrring 95% of the way until the end (which is incredible). If you keep going past the bridge maybe 0.25 miles, there's a really cool "tree tunnel" that's excellent for photos. After that the trail gets more boring and even muddier. No more overlooks. But the highlight of the trail was just before the bridge (maybe 0.25 miles after picnic tables). There's a particular overlook where you wonder "how is EVERY single thing green??". Even tree trunks. (FYI there is good Verizon coverage the whole way).

It’s a nice hike down from the road. At the bottom you can also choose to walk up the big red hill and get a beautiful 360 view from up on top. Definitely worth the hike. The beach is gorgeous!

excellent trail for hiking, I would recommend carrying some rain gear as it is prone to rain as you get close to the top. there are a lot of cattle, sheep, and goats along the way. lots of wildflowers, but my favorite part was The sound of silence. there is a gate to get in that opens automatically you must be out by 6 p.m. so plan your hike accordingly. aloha, Avery

no shade

Went right at dawn and it was beautiful. As others have said, there isn't really shade so I'd suggest going early before the sun is fully out. One down side is there's a good amount of it on an asphalt road, but I didn't bother going down the Ohia trail on the way back which might have been more scenic. There's parking near the hunter check in that's past the hiker check in (I initially parked near the gate and had to walk back to repark)

Beautiful landscapes but too much domestic conditions (asphalt on a good part of the way and agricultural roads for the rest). But the landscape is worth it

Beautiful views all along this trail. Took so many pics. I’d rate this as an easy moderate hike. Lots of shade in the beginning then the path narrows - to more stunning views!! When you get close to the end, there is a steep drop down to continue - we found an alternate route - at the picnic table under the pavilion, there is an alternate path to the right. This is a much easier and safer stroll out which meets up with the main path in 2-3 minutes. Trail ends at a bridge. Awesome hike!

pretty muddy with it raining today, but superfun! nice steady incline with good views at a couple spots. I went past the bridge a couple miles and liked it. wear good hiking footwear, slippery. Be prepared to get dirty on this hike.

Great hike. Do the full loop and go all the up to the summit to finish the hike. Then hitchhike down to your car. Great chance to see the MOST diverse terrain you’ll see on a hike - ever.
