This is a moderate trending on the hard. Bring good shoes and watch out for the rocks all over the place. Nice scenery all the way down. We were lucky enough to see goats, pigs and India mongoose. Bring your snorkling gear since it’s the perfect spot! Lots of beautiful fish. It’s was a good workout to go back up!

Would rate this as moderate but on the difficult side of moderate. We ended up trail running down most of it slowing towards the bottom where there is loose gravel. Great view of the south west side of the island.

Going up was a challenge- took us about 45 minutes at a brisk pace and passed a few families with kiddos that looked to be struggling. Would not recommend doing with young kids, the elevation climb on the way up is no joke.

Saw some dolphins in the bay and lots of fish. Looks like good snorkeling if you don’t mind trekking the gear back up.

Cheers!

VERY steep hike in and out, but worth it for the views at the bottom. Got to see some dolphins in the bay and lots of neat fish. Bring lots of water, sunscreen, and sturdy shoes. It took us about 2 hours round trip going at a fast pace (we ran down), but I'd allot for more like 3-4 hours.

Bring plenty of water and good walking shoes, Not for slippers!

what a gorgeous trail! totally worth a visit. we went on a Wednesday afternoon. the hike back up is a little challenging, but most people can do it. the bottom of the trail is one of the most beautiful places I've seen in Hawaii.

Don’t let the locals and their fake no trespassing signs scare you, most of the trashed areas I’ve seen on the island has been them dumping their trash behind their own homes. (Including couches and tires, seriously???)

This is a public hike and it’s gorgeous. Beautiful blue water and white sand. Peaceful, good hike down.

Best place for photo opportunities, bluest water on the island and scarcely populated. Go past the houses on the beach following the coast

Nice trail from ancient lava flow. The drive in is a tough slog. This is not a difficult hike. Waters are beautiful.

Gorgeous views from the upside. Definitely a wet hike, but well worth it.

Scenic but expect to go slow because the trail is completely loose lava stones

Always spectacular! More challenging when wet. A must see on the Island.

Great hike! The juice was worth the squeeze. Very secluded and serene with an abundance of turtles. A must see, but hike beyond two residential homes to the hidden bay.

The descent is not much trouble, but coming back up (in the heat of the afternoon) can be tough. We carried our 19 month old daughter, because we weren't able to travel with our hiking carrier- I would not recommend this to anybody. We made it, but it was definitely harder than we expected. Pack lightly and of course bring plenty of water. We got down in just over 40 minutes, took almost 1 hour 15 to get back to the top.

We hiked it as a family and had a great time. It’s all down hill at first so be prepared to walk back up with very uneven footing. It was sunny and trail was dry for us. Lots of shade to break and rest if you need to. My kids ages 7 and 12 did great on it. Bring lots of water. It’s beautiful!

Easy enough hike down (just pay a bit of attention to where you step in places or the lava rocks will humble you). Swimming is absolutely astounding. I went in with a swimsuit and pair of goggles and lost track of time just floating around watching the fish and coral and urchins below. Saw folks in flippers and wet shoes, pack accordingly if you feel you need to. Left my boots and pack in the shade and spent a good deal of time in the water. Had a snack and headed back up when clouds rolled in. Hike back up in the rain was pretty refreshing actually (I mean...you’re already wet from swimming). 45 mins to get down and almost an hour back out with a few take a drink and look around breaks. The portion between marker 3 and 1 feels like the hardest on the way back up, just an fyi. Take it at your own pace and rest when you need.

Also, there was a small paper posted at the trailhead by the person who has been maintaining this trail with their contact info if you want to help- shout out to them for all their hard work.

Such an incredible walk. We parked at the gate walked in an extra 1.5 miles at 600 AM. Got to see Hawaiian Monk Seals and the wild goats.

Awesome trial with a lovely beach at the beginning and an amazing lookout at the end! Well worth the muddy, scramble-y trail! Wear good shoes that you don’t mind getting muddy! A walking stick would also be a good idea. A great hike!

Nice walk to the beach. Not much of a hike, but beach was beautiful.

Absolutely beautiful walk along the ocean (most of the way). When you start the accent up to the top of the cinder cone hill look to your left and you’ll see a thin walking trail (vs. the dirt road used by cars). This path will not take you to the top but will save you from a steep and slippery climb and decent. Take lots of water. We had two of our group (of 4) hail an Uber from Kua Beach back to Kona as round trip was almost 9 miles (25% of the time walking through sand). Not super easy and not kid friendly in my opinion. Highly recommended if your looking for Hawaiian beauty and you’ve got about 4 hours to spend on a walk. Kua bay was super crowded... some of the beaches near the southern end of the hike were absolutely beautiful and were empty at 11am (as we hiked north) and still uncrowned at 2pm (as we returned south). The trail is not clearly marked and having all-trails with GPS was wonderful to have.

Very rocky and unstable footing.

Lovely hike, but by no means secluded. Lots of turtles and gorgeous views.

Easy walk down to the beach. Very pretty, some shade available.

Easily one of our favourite hikes on the island. The first part down to the beach is crowded but once you cross the beach and start the path to the ridge the crowd thins out and it’s fabulous.

Great conditions on the trail when we went, but can easily see how rainy weather could make the trail much more slippery. Very happy we chose this hike with limited time on the island. Definitely worth the time with the beautiful views along the trail, the beach at the bottom, and exploring the side trails at the bottom. Would be perfect to hike down for a picnic and relaxing couple of hours.
