WalkingFloodedGreat!

The Japanese garden was beautiful even though it was flooded at the time. Coconut Island is great for lunch and a dip in the ocean.

Lovely day hike. We didn’t finish the entire loop, just did out and back 4mi or so. Really neat ecosystems and lots of native plants and birds. Very sad to see some trash here and there. We were able to pack it out because we had extra bags. PLEASE be respectful and pack out what you pack in (including your poo and tissues).

Very peaceful walk. Nice well kept landscaping. A little bit of trash. Saw a family of mongoose and yellow birds.

This was a weird walk. Park on the side of the road. I ended up walking behind some buildings in an industrial area. The wall is a bunch of big volcanic rocks. Slick when wet. It felt sketchy and unsafe although I saw no one else here

This was not my first plan, but it was nice. Very unique trail that traverses lava fields and island forests, The scenery is very diverse, and following the cairns across the lava beds is fun. However, the AllTrails map requires that you leave the true trail and traverse off trail to connect to the other trail. I chose not to do that, but rather to follow the Pu'u O'o Trail to where it connected with the other trail. This adds some mileage, and I admit that this hike would be better at 7 miles, than the 9 or 10 miles I hiked. If you follow the Pu'u O'o Trail to where it intersects with the off-road vehicle trail (it is very obvious, there is a sign, just follow the trail to the sign), you will walk back past the entrance to a cave/lava tube. There is a sign posted that entry is prohibited without permit. (That trail is also on here, the Ensinine Trail, I think). While the off-road vehicle trail may not be as much fun as the other, it was a straight easy (albeit the rock) hike out. And the hike along the road was not horrible. The flowers were still pretty and the black pearls (the berries) were beautiful.

Difficult but enjoyable trail. Bring lots of water, lunch, and plenty of snacks. Recommend good hiking shoes with ankle support. Very rough almost the whole way.

it's cool. I took a left for 30 minutes with a friend and tracked back because he had to be somewhere. The next time I went alone to the right. I went 20-25 minutes in with a steady pace. reached the end with a hole on the right about 1.5 feet wide and a foot tall. you can try to go through but you would risk shredding your clothes. I can see it gets bigger on the other side but it was such a tight squeeze. I had to back track.

HikingGreat!

Whoever does this as an 8 hour round trip must be Superman. It took me 7 hours up and no idea down as someone picked up my sorry, clearly not used to altitude behind . Honestly the altitude messed me up mentally more than physically. This is my first climb with altitude and yes, I sat at the VIS for a good long time (enough to eat breakfast and drink a bigggg cup of tea). I eventually felt fine at the summit, but was jacked up in between. I’d hike it again, maybe with some chai or energy gels to give me an extra boost.

This is always a spectacular trail that never disappoints. Today we heard what we thought was thunder booming in the clouds but I think it may have been mortars exploding at Pohakuloa!

The only reason for the rating is because of the inaccuracy of listing this trail for public access. The loop trail is absolutely 5 stars. I just want to point out that this trail in the reviews are actually for the “Pu’u O’o short loop trail”. The entire trail mapped here (approx 15 mi, one way, in and out type of trail) is not a public access trail and crosses over multiple conservation areas of different jurisdictions. It goes from Saddle Rd nearly to Volcano. This is a historical trail route with some portions likely not marked any longer. See the “Pu’u O’o short loop trail” description for a more accurate map of the public access route (approx 7.5mi loop, which is fantastic and one of my favorites).

Hiking

Hike with diverse landscapes that leads you through lava fields and forested sections. Nice and cool especially in the summer. Be sure to start early as foggy clouds usually roll in after 11am. If it is very foggy portions of the trail are hard to navigate. The old 4x4 road on the way back is not that inspiring, but offers an easy return path to the highway.

Highly recommend that those wishing to visit Mauna Kea consider this hike rather than just drive to the top. This trail is an incredible hiking experience, however approach it with the respect it deserves and plan for this relatively short hike properly. Bring 3L of water, sunscreen, a hat for shade, and atleast two layers of cold weather gear. This route is a high altitude, extreme exposure hike. Not particularly grueling as a climb, but be sure you are acclimatized and ready for 4-5 miles at higher than 11000 feet.
