Aloha! Fun hike. Can be muddy like lots of the ridges out here on island. Definitely not a short one. I hike this trail quite often for many years now. Usually a few times per week. Microspikes are good to have. At minimum please wear proper hiking footwear and be prepared. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen. Feel free to reach out to me on Instagram @mike.karas or my email mikekarasphotography@gmail.com if you’d like to join me for the hike or for info/other questions about the hike. I’ve done most of the hikes on the island before. Also please pack out your trash! Too many litterbugs on the island sadly. Mahalo!

This hike was incredible. I was worried about not having proper spikes/traction on my shoes as I just have running shoes & was also worried about not having gloves but I ended up not needing them (although they probably would have been helpful). I was also nervous about the second portion of the hike as I heard that there is rope climbing involved & a very narrow path. Although that is true, it is definitely manageable as long as you watch your step & are prepared for a 7+ hour hike round trip. Make sure to bring water & snacks along the way as well as sunscreen. Apart from that, enjoy the view, they are truly out of this world.

Very slippery and rocky trail! You can’t even enjoy the scenery because you can’t take your eyes off the ground! Not a great beach either

This trail has a LOT of ups and downs!geographically. it's challenging enough without a pack, but my friend and I were going to camp at Hanakoa. I had to turn back, but she kept on. Looking forward to hear her review of Hanakoa!

HikingGreat!

Hey friends!! This trail is amazing. The view at the top is spectacular and you just feel on top of the world. I would definitely recommend you bring a windbreaker/jacket for the top though. It’s quite chilly and atleast a gallon for each person in your party. I run @hike.oahu and we do photography tours of this hike often (multiple times a week before COVID hit). If you have any questions about the hike at all, DM me and if you’re interested in our photo tour (guide and high quality/professional photos taken of you on the hike). Mahalo!

Definitely not an easy hike, but well worth the sweat. Absolutely breathtaking views throughout the entire hike. Do your research beforehand to know where to go or you'll hop on the wrong trail like we did. Pro tip: once you hit the Kulana'ahane Trail sign and turn left to cross over the (dry) riverbed, there will be another fork in the road. Choose the RIGHT not left path here. You'll know you're on the correct path because you will pretty immediately start going uphill. If you don't, you've gone the wrong way. Overall, with PLENTY of breaks, long lunch stop at the top, and an hour and a half detour in the wrong direction, our total time was 11 hours. Take way more water than you think you'll need and wear shoes with good grip, and clothes you don't mind getting dirty!

Very fun trail! Climbing wasn’t too hard just very long hike! Views were worth it!

HikingGreat!

I felt like I was waking in the sky, on the moon. The views are incredible.

This hike it’s 10.3 miles. They need to correct that.

Started the trail at close to 6 am, a few hunters drive in before us. The first few miles in were you will cross a few bridges and dry streams. When you get to the base of the mountain you being the climb up through guava trees then head over to cross a few narrow ledges and start to climb up loose rocky dirt pathways with a few sections of rope this can take a couple hours depending. The end will lead you to the satellite tower which is the last stop of the stairways. The views were great! No rain or strong winds during our hike. Going in through the valley and back down again takes time and endurance. Make sure to bring lots of water and sun protection.

First 2.5 miles - very easy and flat. I run them in less than 30 minutes. The next 1.5 miles or so are physically very hard but absolutely no real danger or exposure. The final mile includes more inclined ascendency and has 2 parts with ropes. It isn’t difficult, but any mistake could be fatal. I recommend to use climbing shoes with good grip and gloves for the way down on the rope areas. The views are astonishing since mile 2.5 up and down!
