Trekked this with a friend, a guide and two “Tourista Policia” armed with 9 mm Beretta pistols on 2/7/19. Trail is in great shape with over 3,100 actual steps. As you probably know, steps are challenging. The armed tourist police are a possibility because bandits from the poor village on the other side of the volcano had made a living off of robbing tourists who trekked the volcano without protection. With protection, the trek is challenging with a rewarding view of the lake, the villages and the other volcanos.

The view at the top is phenomenal. We got to see Fuego spouting often!! Excruciatingly intense hike tho, not for the faint of heart. Literally.

Extremely hard but was a hiking trip of a lifetime. This hike is so intense that words really can’t describe it. We went with Tropicana Tours and the guides were local Guatemalan guys. They were great in every respect. The hike began at 8,000 ft and camped at 12,000 ft. We took breaks about every 30 min or so give or take. At 4:30am the following day, we hiked to the summit, an additional 1,000 ft gain to watch the sunrise. If going, don’t underestimate how cold it is up there. We were well prepared and stayed warm. The volcano was very active and we saw the show of a lifetime. Fuego blew about every 15-20 minutes. The hike up took 5+ hours with breaks, an hour up to the summit the next am and then three hours out. Advance incline training helped us a lot. Totally a 5-star hike.

Incredibly challenging and very slippery. Hiking poles or walking stick make it manageable

I went up Acatenango in a guided group on a different path than indicated on the map. My guide said they use the one on the map sometimes when they do overnight hikes. Our path was 12 miles round trip. Beautiful, but brutally steep. My guide told me they call the last scree portion something similar to “b*tch trail” and it’s pretty accurate. Views are incredible, got to see Fuego spout a little from the top! It was pretty windy and cold in the forested section so wear layers and a wind breaker.

Great hike. Strenuous and relentless uphill grind but worth the spectacular views if you are lucky to have a clear day. Although I went up in rainy season (June-Oct), we lucked out with sunshine up and down, albeit a haze across the eastern half of the lake. . Had a knowledgeable guide, Ronny Ventura, with 3 years of almost daily trips under his belt. Guide is more for safety, than trail finding.

Strenuous hike, best to wear hiking boots and bring at least 4L of water and extra snacks. Usually damp/rainy and cold so bring extra layers of clothing.

Don’t expect to see fiery lava, but still an amazing hike! Not every day you get to hike up an active volcano and see smoke and rocks flying up and hear the rumbling in the distance! You can’t get near the crater because it is unsafe, but you will see some amazing lava flows and can do the touristy marshmallow roast! On the way if it’s a clear day you will have excellent views of three other volcanos, Agua, Fuego, and Acantenago. A short, relatively easy hike with the option of going on horseback also.

A must do in Guatemala!

Beautiful views, but a difficult hike! 1,000 ft of elevation for every 1 mile over a well maintained trail--however it's a standard volcano hike where for every 2 steps up you slide back 1 step. Folks with average fitness can do this hike, but may HATE it--continual ascent, very cold temps at the top with high winds (and potential stinging rain/mist). Not for everyone, but if you make it up to the top you will be treated to phenomenal views of the Antigua valley and a light show with neighboring Volcan Fuego hopefully erupting for you up close and personal. Best done as a an overnight backpacking trip, to watch the sunrise at the peak. Go with Guilmer's family as a guide!!
