Most difficult hike I have done. Trails very steep/ uphill and it’s exhausting. The view is stunning at the top, but my group was rushed very quickly because of the danger of bandits. I suggest going at the earliest time possible, lessens your chance of getting robbed, because it actually does happen frequently. If you do this hike, make sure and get on the tire swing, it looks terrifying but it’s rad!

Most challenging hike I've done. We got lucky to have a nice day but it was vertical incline all. the. way. Glad to have completed this though!

Very challenging hike given the altitude. I recommend flying in at least a few days prior to the hike to adjust, but ideally a week early would be helpful. I hiked with a group of about 12 people, one almost didn’t make it to the top due to the difficulty. We hired armed guides as security is important for this hike- one led and one followed. The view is beautiful! We watched the nearby volcano erupt. Highly recommend!

Beautiful all the way. Recommend to take a Guide with you which is included in the Entry fee (100q each, approx $12). We weren’t accompnied by policia but left all valuables and identification papers in the main office at the trailhead. Didn’t encounter any banditos. Be aware the trail will be mostly stairs, so kinda hard on the legs on the way up and down but the view is 100% worth it at the top. Make sure to leave early to get best chances at clear view at the top!

Trekked this with a friend, a guide and two “Tourista Policia” armed with 9 mm Beretta pistols on 2/7/19. Trail is in great shape with over 3,100 actual steps. As you probably know, steps are challenging. The armed tourist police are a possibility because bandits from the poor village on the other side of the volcano had made a living off of robbing tourists who trekked the volcano without protection. With protection, the trek is challenging with a rewarding view of the lake, the villages and the other volcanos.

Great hike. Strenuous and relentless uphill grind but worth the spectacular views if you are lucky to have a clear day. Although I went up in rainy season (June-Oct), we lucked out with sunshine up and down, albeit a haze across the eastern half of the lake. . Had a knowledgeable guide, Ronny Ventura, with 3 years of almost daily trips under his belt. Guide is more for safety, than trail finding.
