Tourla-Mouggila Nature ReserveLength: 11.4 mi • Est. 6 h 31 m
Gates of Hades (gr: Πύλες του Άδη) is a narrow part of the canyon formed by the Acheron river in the region of Epirus, in northwestern Greece. The river was believed to serve as the gates to the underworld in Ancient Greek religion.
The narrows are accessed off the side of the road near Trikastro. The first part of the route is the most swimming-intensive, as you enter the river at a deep and narrow point. The route follows the river with swimming required for around 1/3 of the way; the rest of the route consists of walking either on the forested riverbanks or in the shallower parts of the river and its white pebble beaches. After following the river, all the way over its characteristic water pools and their waterfalls, one reaches the springs of the Acheron river in the Glyki area, where wilderness gradually gives way to a developed area with a restaurant and a parking lot.
