Our hotel in Vitsa dropped us off in Vikos and we made the trek through the gorge to Missios bridge before heading back up to our hotel in Vitsa. Great hike with loads of wildlife (frogs, lizards, snakes, birds). After the Monodendri turn-off, the trail crosses the river bed and back which can be a little hard to pick up, but keep walking in the river bed and you will see the trail pick back up as it crosses back. Hiking up the Vitsa steps will be hot (bring water). Total trip was roughly 10-11 miles, just under 6 hours moving at a pretty good clip.

Possibly one of my favorite day hikes ever. Start early in the morning and you’ll make it back down just in time for a afternoon beer at Dias in Mikro Papigko. It’s chilly up top!

Amazing place and also suggestive. it is a pretty difficult GO to a little village because there is just one bus to time a week(Monday and Friday) once at 6a.m from Ioannina to the village and at 2.45 p.m. from the village to Ioannina.

This is not a trail but a dirt road servicing sheep pens. There are many dogs on that road. They bark but they don't threaten. Most of them were friendly. Anyway it was a nice walk with a splendid views.

This is a not maintained overgrowth trail. Trail signs are rare and contradicting. The trail was certainly done and redone by an amateur. Only the viewpoint at the end that worth seeing. Take the car instead.

Not very much to see in the canyon. I would recommend to start the opposite way around (Vikos). Once one is on the canyon floor, cross the river and hike to Mikro Papingo (you can see the trail on the map). You will be walking along the edge of a cliff with astonishing views on the canyon.

The beginning is suck, walking on a gravel road (about 1/3 of the trek). Good luck in finding the trail at the end of the road. It is not maintained neither marked and animals have destroyed any path. In any event, one has to walk in the grassing valley, keeping the mountain wall on the east side. All of the sudden, a well marked trail appears when one starts climbing toward the pass. In conclusion, the trail was magic for the last 2/3.

We hiked up in an hour and a half and back in an hour. Well worth it to view the stone craftsmanship, just incredible! There’s a couple of stone arch bridges in the beginning and a little chapel on top of the mountain. We only saw three other people on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. Could use a bush trim in a couple of places.

Epic views. Clearly marked and used. Awesome all day trek with optional cold dip for in the river at springs near end in Vikos village. 16th century monastery near spring. Descent at start can be slippery in the morning. Just go slow. Another shorter trek is Papigo to Vikos.

The trail is almost completely shaded, the walk is between trees. The view is great! According to the recording it’s around 15 kilometers

The trail is generally easy with occasional steep uphills to get around a cliff on the riverbank. The church is a short climb off to the side and is a highlight not to be missed.

Great hike. Starts with a long decent from Monodendri to the gorge, continues between the trees along the dry river, arrives to Volos Spring (wonderful) and climbs up to Vikos. Recommended.

Awe-inspiring hike through the second largest gorge in the world, starting and ending at 2 of the many lovely, quaint Zagori villages. Quite different from your usual ascent based hikes, as you start by descending into the gorge and literally hiking through it. Varied terrain (rock, grass, river bank and snow) makes for an interesting experience.

Day 1 Vitsa - Kipoi - Vradeto (6 hours) Day 2 Vradeto- Beloi Viewpoint- Tespelovo (4 hours) Day 3 Tsepelovo - Astraka mountain hut ( 7 hours) Day 4 Ascent of Gamilla I from hut (total 5 hours) Day 5 Astraka hut- Dragon lake- Astraka hut - Mikro Papigo ( 5 hours) Day 6 Mikro Paigo- Vikos Gorge -Monodendri (6 hours) A beautiful trek which brings you every day through different scenery.
