This route leads to the dam Neustadt, up to the castle Hohnstein on the castle mountain and back. The Neustadt dam is the oldest dam in Thuringia. This is where the Krebsbach, whose water serves the drinking water supply, accumulates. The path always leads along the eastern shore of the reservoir. Then follow the signs to Hohnstein Castle. This lies on a porphyry cone, the Schlossberg. It was built in 1120 by Konrad von Sangerhausen and was the ancestral seat of the Counts of Hohnstein, later expanded under Count zu Stolberg to a Renaissance castle and conquered by the Saxons and burned down in the Thirty Years' War. In Burggasthof you can stop, the rustic "witches cottage" is ideal.Show more
