#2 - Harzer-Hexen-Stieg
Nationalpark HarzLength: 62.2 mi • Est. Multi-day
On the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg, the Harz presents its guests with a very special fairytale and mystical side. Here hikes become a real experience. The legendary Brocken is just one of many highlights of the exciting long-distance hiking trail that runs across the Harz mountains and crosses the Harz National Park. But not only friends of fairy tales and legends come here at their expense. The "enchanting" resin landscape also delights nature lovers and pleasure hikers. On the Harzer-Hexen-Stieg, topics from nature, geology, history and culture combine to create an exciting cross-section of the northernmost German low mountain range. Green mixed and coniferous forests, rocky gorges and steeply rising cliffs, millennia-old raised bogs and medieval half-timbered towns lie along the way. Testimonies of the more than thousand years of mining history can be found at every step. For example, the narrow trenches of the UNESCO World Heritage "Upper Harz Water Management", one in the 16.-18. Century created for the mining water collection system. The path is adorned with a series of artistic installations, the so-called "islands of experience", pointing to interesting but often hidden details along the way.
