We hiked/camped this last weekend (11/8/19-11/10/19). drove in on Friday night. The road up is pretty much ideal until about 5,000 ft of elevation. After that, if you do not have high clearance 4X4, don't bother. The snow is thick and the road is slick! That said, if you can facilitate, do it! On 11/9/19 we hiked to all three lakes. They are all completely frozen over. At the shore line it is at least 5-6 inches thick with ice. Perfectly safe to walk on. HIGHLY recommend snow shoes if you plan on this with snow. There is consistently about 2 feet of snow at all of the lakes and on all of the trails. We did a lot of "post holing," but well worth the views of the winter wonderland! It was absolutely stunning!
