Love this hike, but not sure why it is listed as easy. There is a “trail” to it now, but only because it is getting a lot of traffic since it was published in some articles. You really have to keep your eyes open for the little plastic markers in the trees. If you start out on the road you will cross the creek seven times (one way) but if you stay to the left where the old pipeline goes you cut out one crossing. You also will have to cross several boulder fields where rock slides have come down. Depending on the time of year you go, the creek crossings can be down right dangerous. We’ve gone several times and have had to turn back because of high water before. The first time we made it there were sections of the creek that we were waist high. If you’re planning to go I recommend going in fall or winter when the water is low. It is doable as a day hike but more fun as an overnight trip. Don’t litter and destroy the buildings and/or the old furniture.

This is a great trail with old mining buildings all along it. When you first start out if you go to the right you have a steeper hill that is a little over .30 miles at the beginning and a short steep hill at the very end. If you go left it is a meandering uphill walk for a bit. The trail tops out a little over 10,200 feet in altitude so while it’s rated easy, the altitude could get some. There are benches all along the path for those that need a moment. On a very busy fall weekend we only encountered 4-5 other families on the trail. It is dog friendly but there are lots of deer and small wildlife along the way so leashes are good for those that like to chase.

A fun trail, not too difficult. A good trail for beginners who want to learn how to handle larger rock climbing. We have a lifted Jeep but one person in our group hand a stock truck. The truck did the trail well with only one spot that took a little longer.

We absolutely loved this hike! We took our 2 dogs with us, and enjoyed seeing the mining ruins along the way -- exercise, fresh air and an amazing "museum!" Some of the elevation points were steeper than expected, but it was a great trail.

if you do not have atleast 6 inches of clearance i wouldn't recommend doing this trail. it starts out easy but once you start to actually climb the boulders get real rough. I'd say it's slightly above most moderate trails but not quite difficult. it is possible in a stock 4x4 but a lift would make it alot easier. lots of rock shelves to climb up and over and go down. 8 mile loop took us about 3-4 hours because of all the rocks in the trail and us stopping for breaks or to check the trail ahead. we were both in stock 4x4s. very fun if you want something technical. didn't see a soul the entire drive. I'd say a full sized truck might have trouble with a long wheel base but if you have a jeep or suv you'll have a blast. it also gets very tight between the trees, i ended up scratching the hell out of my right side but it'll buff out.

4.12.19 Lovely little hike today with wonderful views of the Sange de Cristo mountains! Rustic lodgings and old gold mines litter the hillside. Plenty of benches to sit and enjoy the scenery!

Great short hike. Relatively easy, does have some uphill to get your heart pumping. Trail is easy to follow with lots of signs with information about the abandon mines and old homesteads. There was still some snowy places when we were there on Saturday morning, and it was very windy. But the sun was shining, yay! Beautiful views! Nice hike, lots to see even if you don’t have a lot of time, you can get this one done!

Absolutely awesome hike; super easy but just tons of abandoned mining buildings and such. Super fun to walk around and explore.

We did this as a night driving trail. It wasn’t hard at all, but there are a few fun spots. Neat to do with the jeep lit up. 2015 JKUR lifted and with all the right stuff

Awesome historical hike around some old gold mines and passes by an active mine you can see production on. The trail description says stroller and ADA compatible but I disagree especially with the wash out on the trail... with young kids I highly advise hiking carriers. Overall a really great time and am glad we went!

Nice historical hike. Benches along the way were a nice touch. We liked the tunnel of Aspen trees you walk through at one point and it was the right time of year to see the colors changing. We took our 4 kids ages newborn, 2, 4, and 6. It wasn't an easy hike for most of them. I do think a jogging stroller would do fine on the terrain though. We would do that next time.

It was beautiful in a few stopping places, but mostly just driving on rocks between trees and bushes, so unlike Shelf Road to get there (which is gorgeous but easy) this drive isn't really about seeing much. Instead, it's about crawling around of the rocks. So it depends on what you're looking for. I did have fun, but it was definitely more difficult than I was originally intending to do since I was going solo. It gets pretty narrow in places with some slanted sections that were tricky, and it left quite a few pinstripes. (Stock 2015 Xterra 4X4)

Easy trail with some cool history. There is an active mine nearby so it was interesting to see big equipment moving around and then looking back at 100+ yr old mines.

its a fun and easy trail of all the mining history it made a good youtube video for my channel David Garzas gold (subscribe) because i explore abandoned mines just stay on trail because the old building have a lot of nails and are not safe stay out stay alive

I’d say this trail is rated medium to hard. Gets a little tight in there so you could get some scratches in the truck. Over all though it was a great drive with some beautiful views.

Went with 4 of my kids and had a blast learning about history....took the wrong trail back and ended up at the highway...will have to do this again.

The Bank Loop is a cool loop that can be run in either direction. It has amazing views and a little bit of difficulty to keep it interesting. Looking for trails this time of year I was happy to find something open, and at such low elevation. if you'd like to se a video of the run I have one up at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vno7wOi7QJs 07 ranger manual bilsteins 13psi 33" no lift no locker no sway bar youtube trail channel: b roll offroad have fun!
