Me and my dad took 3hr 45min out of our day to attempt to make it to Rampart Reservoir and back. Stanley Canyon is a beautiful winter hike, with a steep climb up for about 1.5 miles, featuring a mini icy waterfall you have to get past on the side of a ledge. After the steep climb, it flattens out all the way to Stanley reservoir, which is frozen over and drained but still cool to look around the area. We went on to the left (southwest) of Stanley reservoir, which was hiking on a snowy dirt road for the rest of our journey. After quite a ways on the road to Rampart Reservoir, we came to a “no trespassing, private property” gate (which had light barb wire and was locked). We hadn’t read anything online prior to the hike about private property along the way so wanted to mention it here. We also ran into a couple of men in a truck later apparently patrolling the area and they told us that they didn’t want people in the ‘no trespassing area’ because there is construction and a lot of equipment that would make it dangerous for people hiking the road. And he said there were “cameras everywhere” and that the Sheriff was going to start prosecuting people. We were bummed not to have made it all the way up to Rampart Reservoir, especially as it seems as if people commonly do hikes to Rampart Reservoir from the Academy...but maybe we went the wrong way?
