It is a relatively easy trail. Takes about an hour to go from the staging area to the summit where the observatory is. Trail is maintained due to the communication equipment at the summit. But there are rocks falling all the time so watch for large rocks on the trail or washouts when we get heavy rain. The trail is easily done in a stock SUV or any 4x4 . The hardest part is some areas where it is fairly steep. Take time to stop on the way up and enjoy the views as you ascend. There are parking areas with fire pits and picnic tables at the top. Not much shade so if you need it bring your own. This is the highest peak in the low desert at 5,681’. There are multiple mines in the area. Always be careful when walking off trail. You never know where you may find an open mine shaft. This trip we stopped at the Monterey Jack mine. It is a spur that is closer to the bottom than the top. It crosses the wash and takes you to a very rugged trail with some larger rocks and steep climbs on loose rocks. I did it in a stock ‘06 Toyota Sequoia. Just go slow and pick your line wisely. Having a spotter is very helpful for those without a lot of clearance. There is an open vertical and horizontal mine shaft fenced off. Also stone building and other mining structure. The trail gets tougher the further you go. When in doubt get out and look. You can park by the building and walk up if nothing else.

Nice park to camp and go hiking.

+/- 80 miles out of Phoenix. Definitely need 4X4 LOW on last half of trail. Wouldn’t want to touch last half/top of trail during or shortly after rain as there were some muddy spots on shelf roads when I took it a few days after a decent wet spell. Just go slow and keep momentum. Loose, steep rock scrabbling as elevation gains. At bottom, fun run through washes (possible water crossings after rain/in spring) that any stock SUV can manage on 2X. The 10 miles to the top is good for novice/intermediate driver. I went alone. Never thought about needing a spotter. May need to move some rockfall from road towards top. Took 30 minutes to top about 45 minutes down though I was rushing to beat sunset. Plan 2-3 hours if taking time. Mind blowing views of central AZ. Worth the drive. Especially on way back from or to California if a couple extra hours to kill.

Not a bad little half day trip from Phx. Exposed rocks the last mile or so. Windy up top. Overall a nice little city escape.

Please air down before you hit this road. It will save the road for the next off roaders. I drive this road almost monthly and how rough it is depends on the season. Great views for the top. There is a picnic area at the summit.

Nice scenic trail ..no traffic...a bit steep and rocky near peak with loose gravel. Beautiful panoramic views once you reach the top

Lots of fun, but really rocky! Make sure your tires aren’t going to puncture on this road. Worth the view at the top.

Real easy drive, no obstacles to speak of. The scenery is great and enjoy coming down the mountain as you pick up speed. Picnic tables at the top are great for a break and the observatory while not open has quite a few informational postings that are really interesting.
