Pleasantly surprised by this little gem here in my hometown of Wasilla. Features a creek that runs down off the ridge. Half forested ridge hike, half Hayflats hike. Easy with good Mountain Views and a good perspective of the Hayflats, being you can just wander out there into the nothingness. Food included a granola bar.

nice and comfortable trail

Trails are in great shape. Lots of off-leash dogs, a few on leash. Trails near the parking lot were heavily traveled during the 6pm hour. Farther out up near the ridge on the single track trails were rather quiet and a great hike.

Short loop (somewhat mismapped in AllTrails). Obvious east/south side of the loop is from kiosk at east side of parking area (note Apple maps does not show the gravel road in to the refuge). Other end of loop comes in west side of parking lot, not a distance down the east/south side trail. Lookout is a short 400’ down the east trail (enter view structure from west side). Beyond that trail follows a ridgeline with lots of prominent tree roots. Before reaching the east end as mapped on AllTrails, trail turns left (look for brown trail signs about 9-10’ off the ground). Quick descent brings you to other side of loop, which follows an old road through forest. Short spur to north goes toward a small lake. At edge of refuge, trail turns left off old road (signs againup high on tree) and heads back to parking lot. Some decent flowers but main attraction is viewpoint to Border Ranges and Chugash Mts to ESE from viewpoint. Signs say another trail is down by the mudflats farther down the road (not in AllTrails).

if you're in the area, it's a nice little walk...otherwise, it's nothing to write home about.

Easy trail in the winter, it is pretty icy right now. I didn't use cleats or spikes, but will if I go again before spring. It is hard to keep track of the trail at times, and there was a pretty steep hill to go down on the ice. I will be checking it out again in the summer.

Nice easy hike through beautiful wooded area... but the roots are terrible! Wear proper shoes to support your ankles and be careful on the hills.

A lovely little hike that I was able to do with my 70 year old parents. It checked all the boxes we were hoping for in a hike — great views, lush forest setting, wildlife (bald eagle sighting!), manageable trail, a beautiful stream, and even some fun surprises like a cool old wreckage of some sort. The only downside were the mosquitos!!! They were awful! Be sure to pack bug spray!

nice view from the platform. I like the view on the flats better myself. It wasn't a problem for me but there are a lot of roots in the trail so pick up your toes. The time of year I was out on this little trail there were swarms of flies and mosquitos so bring your bug spray or wear the righ clothes.

very nice trail not to hard ...

The view is as always gorgeous, just make sure to wear proper hiking shoes / boots as it’s still pretty muddy in the end.

It was a nice a walk. It has a nice view and even not being there long we saw an eagle. I'll definitely go back in the summer or spring to see what other birds are in the area.

This trail is used most often by locals. The trail is well used and wanders through heavily canopied trees. Most of the wildlife will be of the bird variety, and as you walk along the bluff that overlooks the Hayflats, you will hear Sandhill Cranes in their summer migratory area in addition to other migratory birds. There is currently one eagle's nest along the bluff area of the trail. In addition, if you look carefully, you will see the remains from old Native American lodge sites and cache pits. The real beauty of the trail is the overlook site about 100' from the parking lot where you are rewarded with beautiful views of the Chugach Mountains and the Palmer Hayflats.

This is a fine trail network, close to town. It has a huge parking lot at the trailhead. There is also a wide grassy area for sports. The trail meanders though quaking aspen and pine woods, and has some fair views of distant mountains. There is a creek that runs through the middle. This trail appears to be very popular with bikers.
