Start at the Griffith Branch Trail access off of Highway 91. This yellow blazed trail starts on a logging road, and there has been some recent logging, so the first part of the trail is fairly unexciting. Not too far in the logging road stops and the trail goes through rhododendron and beautiful forests. One stretch along a ridge promises to offer wide views of the valley when the leaves are down. About two-thirds of the way in, the trail merges with a forest service road, and then continues to provide access to other trails in the area: 2023 (Rye Patch) from Hinkle Branch and 2026 (Furnace Branch) from the Holston Mountain ridge. Overall this is a pleasant scenic hike through beautiful forest which can be used on its own or combined with other trails for longer hiking.

I just hiked ~half of the trail and back (3.5 miles). Good exercise. Some nice views and scenery but no major overlooks. Always nice just to be out in the woods. It was a steady uphill climb - nothing "flat" about Chestnut Flats.
