horsethief lake #14 grizzly #7 centennial on-hell #89 decided to do the horsethief out and back.. but it was such a beautiful day we decided to go the whole loop.. didn't take into consideration that it is an equestrian trail and it rained the day before. the trail was a muddy, muddy, poop laden mess!!! there where many trees down and no where to step off when my husband and I and the dog encountered horses! also it's extremely narrow where the horses have worn it down more then a foot deep in places! the trail is only marked at the trail head and when it intersects with other trails. after this hike i will never do another horse trail agin!!!

9/10 of this trail is very worn from horse traffic. The singletrack trail is very narrow and worn in many areas making it difficult to use trekking poles. Much of this trail Is rocky but not the way you usually see a hiking trail, the horse traffic disrupts rocks which lay all over the trail. Many areas with mud across the entire trail, but if you’re not a horse you don’t sink down into it. The trail is very overgrown in areas, so wear long pants. There were quite a few bugs too, but with use of bug spray, they were no problem. There were many lovely water crossings with either bridges, rocks, or logs, to keep you above the water. This trail offers some lovely views, and one of a side view of Mount Rushmore. We arrived in the morning and did not see anyone else on our entire hike.
