The scramble was pretty sketchy because most of the “steps” were loose boulders. At the top it offered one vista , but also you hike a service road for about a mile. So all in all the climb up the sketchy walk slide really wasn’t worth the end result. Trails close to this area that are similar with better views, and still a part of the MST are plentiful.

it was a nice hike once I finished climbing up the rocks that are supposed to be stairs, I felt like I was scaling like Spider-Man other than that it was beautiful!

Don’t use the crossover trail. Good hike all around, loose rocks on the steps are your only worry.

The climb up there were only a handful of steps. The rest was scaling up what I would say was akin to a rock slide. There were parts that I only felt confident with three points of contact. The trail at the top was very nicely but after reviewing the map and seeing there are many ways to access the top trail we decided not to go back down the steps. It was experience, one I think I will avoid in the future but do plan on visiting the trail at the top but using a different route.

I've hiked this trail at least 20 times. My suggestions would be to 1. bring a buddy who is a AVID hiker, the trail is brutal for first timers to those who only hike small trails. 2. walking sticks are a MUST! the decent down the rocks kill your legs, trecking poles and such lessen the impact. and 3. stupid but simple make sure you drink water before going up, its a lot of steps and one heck of a clime. theirs a nice rest spot with half a vista if you hang a right at the mid state line, keep an eye out for it on the right. bear paw loop connects at the T intersection, going right will put at the bottom of the park near the camping

More like 45 steps, slippery rock pile, then some more steps, rock pile, etc... It’s a shame this trail isn’t better maintained, because it’s beautiful. Rocks are very slippery and some a pretty shaky. Going down is MUCH more difficult due to the grade and the muddy conditions. I don’t suggest hiking it alone. Bring a buddy.

Not really much to see with this trail. I think that the climb down is much more difficult than the climb up, due to how very slippery the rocks are. I imagine that the logging impact which the CCC guys whom built the trail were witness to was far worse than what I saw on the Bear Paw Loop part of the trail. I had to laugh at the “posted” signs, where the trail passes alongside some private property....dude built CAGES for his signs!! If he puts his posted signs in cages: IMAGINE what he would do to trespassers! LOL!

The rocks were slick after all the rain but it was great to get outside after all the rain. A good portion of Bear Paw Loop was flowing water but the dogs loved it! We didn’t mind either. Nice wide trail once you get to the top to accommodate humans and pups.

Definitely a climb at first. Pretty trail once you make it off the rocks.

Parked in the parking lot and climbed. I say climbed as opposed to walked because it was quite steep and very rocky. It didn't help that there was still a little snow remaining. Once I reached the top the walk was very pleasant, relatively level, and easily marked. However, fresh logging activity near the end of the loop made it impossible to determine where the trail actually was. I ended up turning around and retracing my steps. The climb down was no picnic either, but overall this was a nice hike.

I did this in winter, I would not recommend doing it while there is lots of snow like I did, unless you have good winter hiking experience. I loved the trail but it would be safer in the summer or after the snow had melted.

Thousand Step trail requires some scrambling, overall not too difficult. once you reach the top it's smooth sailing until you get to the MST, which leads back down to the pavilions. steep ascent and steep descent but it's worth it. completed in an hour
