Positive things first. Awesome trail, well blazed, clearly beaten into the lay of the land. I followed this map quite literally and it led me exactly where I expected. The elevation gain is substantial and mostly in the first third of the hike, once you get to the top of the ridgeline it is rather easy, but getting there is rather challenging. Views along the top of the ridge are great...plenty of outlooks facing south and west. I also found an Orange Diamond (which turned into lazy orange spray paint circles) trail about a mile past the radio towers, which followed closer to the edge than the blue blazes. As the orange trail turned downward on the mountain into Southington, I had to free-hike about 150-200ft through the woods to the parallel blue trail. Bad news. There is no Hartford view. Ever. It’s winter, I can see through the trees...still no view. I free-hiked to the top of a hill facing Hartford...still no view. I went all the way to the gravel and power lines...still no view. Also, plan extra time. I don’t know where the 5.8 mile length came from in the description. My watch says 8.7 miles and I only went an extra half-mile to the gravel from the turn around point of this map. It took me about 3.5 hours to complete, and I would do this hike again even though I now know I won’t see the Hartford skyline.
