Beautiful trail. Wish we would’ve had time to go all the way up to Duck Lake but stopping at Skeleton Lake was still beautiful. Dog friendly. Steady up climb but not hard.

Beautiful hike. Give yourself plenty of time for side hikes to the different lakes. We had to turn around to make sure we didn't miss our flight and regretted not starting earlier. Bring a good amount of water and snacks.

This lake is pristine and amazing. We had the crystal clear turquoise water to ourselves to swim for about 15 minutes. The bottom is sandy and no water shoes needed. Heaven. The trail was steep- we took it directly back down but came up via emerald lake and duck pass. The trail is rocky as well, which can make footing a little slick going down. Our dogs had no issues with their paws on the terrain. The entire trail was the worst flies and mosquitoes we have encountered. They were truly awful. Not much shade either, so sunny and hot. Made worse by the train of pack horses going by shitting on everything and ruining the trail for everyone else.

This year’s late summer and gorgeous weather also provided us with mosquitoes (they don’t play) and black flies around Skelton Lake. Be prepared and pay attention to weather conditions. The Deer Lake Trailhead slopes gently upward then starts getting steeper as it climbs higher and higher up then it ascends around giant rocks. Up to Skelton then down to the trailhead. Your muscles will think going downhill is easier but they will be wrong.. Uneven rock steps, tree roots, and rocky paths transverse the forest. Today we could hear the rivers yelling downhill from Arrowhead and Skelton Lakes. it was stunning. Don’t forget to look back toward Lake Mary and thank yourself for doing this hike.

7/20 Skelton was our original destination. We stopped for a little bit for a snack but decided to go farther to Barney Lakes. Skelton was pretty and there were many people with their dogs there. The hike was a consistent uphill climb, not super steep but never really flat. We did most of the hikes around Mammoth and this is one of our favorites.

Went this morning at 9:30 and tried to go further to Barney? Turned around because my city attire wouldn’t make it. I was .7 away from the next Lake and turned around. But Skelton was beautiful. Easy as they say lots of people around 11:30 as I headed back. I took Duck Pass vs Emerald Trail. Was back in the parking lot by 11:45 am.

I did this trail with my 6yr old son in July of 2018. He carried most of his own gear but I wasn’t going to be able to encourage him to go any farther. The lake was beautiful and we caught fish for dinner with no problem. There is a very cool old mining camp if you follow the river down to arrowhead that’s worth checking out. This is a perfect quick hike or first time over night trip for an ambitious child. Camping on the water was nice but the mosquitoes come out in force about 5pm.

Very beautiful lake. You do see a few people by the lake fishing and walking around. Took my dogs and they loved it. pretty short walk. Easy hike there.

Stopped here with a group of Boy Scouts on the last day of a 3 nighter into Purple and Pika Lakes. Found a great campsite on the peninsula at the northwest end of the lake and had the place to ourselves for the night even at the height of summer.. Spoke with a fellow fisherman early in the afternoon and we both were getting skunked until he headed back to Mammoth Lakes and I quickly hooked 4 Golden Trout (I released them all). It wasn't until I got back to my computer that I learned there aren't recorded to be Golden in that lake. Beautiful spot, surprisingly pristine and natural despite the proximity to the trailhead. Thanks to all for keeping it that way!!

Nice trail. Hiked up with my wife and two kids, little guys is youngest at 6 years old, both kids did great. We added some mileage taking the Emerald Lake trail then going up and around to Skelton lake then back down past Arrowhead Lake -- 3 lakes in one!! I would highly recommend going this route to Skelton Lake. We just went and camped at Coldwater Campground June 2018 and it was gorgeous! Plenty of shade on the trail. Super fun and easy hike for beginners like us

The trail was full of snow, and we were not prepared with the right pants and footwear (you will step through snow to your knees in places and your pants and shoes will become soaked). We had planned to hike to Barney Lake, but the patches of snow became increasingly deep as we got to Skeleton Lake. This slowed down our pace and we often could not see where the trail was (luckily we had gps and this app to keep an eye on the route which as you can see we didn’t do such a good job of following, lol). The afternoon we hiked it also started to be cold, windy and snow, so we stopped at Skeleton Lake which was absolutely beautiful, and worth the (at times frustrating) hike through snow. 4 and not 5 stars only because of how soggy and snowy and hard to follow the trail was this time of year, also the campground was closed until June 1st so we had to park down at the lake and walk up through the campground.

Moderate hike, nice hike because there are many trees and the shade keeps you cool! Also our dog is the best trail dog and he had a blast.

It's actually Skelton Lake not Skeleton lake

This was a great moderate hike for my wife and I today! Very scenic trail. There was still snow along the way and about 10-12 medium size snow patches to traverse on the trail. Snow is melting fast and the streams, rivers and waterfalls are in full flow. Check out Lake Arrowhead along the way as a side diversion - beautiful! Side note - we met three amazing ladies all in their 70s who traversed the trail with no excuses. They were very inspirational - Eileen, Margaret and Nancy. Happy Trekking.
