Built in 2000 by the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy on the site of a former DWP pipe storage facility, Augustus F Hawkins Nature Park was named after the late U.S. congressman, who, in 1963, became the first elected African-American Congressman west of the Mississippi. In addition to the trail, there is a nature center with lots of family friendly activities throughout the year.

This was a fun little find just off the industrial Slauson corridor. Very nice to see a bit of nature in such an industrialized part of town! The trail itself is mostly paved and easy, except for a small climb to the top of a hill that has Civil War cannons. The little lake is nice, though you're not allowed to get very close. If you work up an appetite, there are a lot of taco trucks/stands on nearby Slauson, with lots of regional variations of Mexican barbacoa.
