Along the very tip. A varied tour that takes you over the walls of Retranchement, Het Zwin and the Zeeland Flemish coast. The Zwin has always played an important role over the centuries. It used to be an important river for the port cities of Bruges, Damme, Sluis and Hoeke, but as a ship you have to be careful not to get stranded in the sand. The lighthouses of Westkapelle and Knokke help prevent this. The zwin is now a beautiful nature reserve where you can clearly see how creeks are created. On both sides of Belgium and Netherlands, it is well dipped and dyed. As is always the case with economic areas, heavy fighting has taken place in this far west of the Netherlands. Cadzand (Bad) is the only real seaside resort in Zeeland Flanders, it is connected to Cadzand, a village that used to be on an island. It was a rather watery area anyway, you even know the Salg van Cadzand during the 100-year war. From Cadzand you head west along the coast and pass the Zwarte Polder. It is a small window where you have to walk at high tide and can pass through at low tide. You can clearly see how the creeks are created. Via the radar tower and the lighthouse, you walk to Breskens. Because it is located on the monindg of the Westerschelde, much has been fought here of course. The Breskens coat of arms looks Austrian. And that is true, because Maximilian of Austria gave permission at that time to impolder the salt marshes, creating Breskens. Breskens was bombed by the Allies in the Second World War (with 200 dead). It is striking how much is said about the damage that the allies have inflicted. The ferry between Vlissingen and Breskens only transports cyclists and individual walkers. With the arrival of the tunnel to Terneuzen, the cars are therefore allowed to detour that entire stretch, so that you can wonder what that is about with the isolation of Zeeland West Flanders. The boat is beautiful, with Maxima's photo adorning the parade like a Mermaid.
