Classic through the Oude Linies. This walking tour runs through the green heart. Because the distance between Oudewater and Gouda is not that great, it is certainly worthwhile to follow a piece of water line. Oudewater so, the beginning. The center is beautiful. The city was a fortified city, it first belonged to the Foundation, later the Dutch owned it. It took until 1970 before it came back to Utrecht (700 years later). Oudewater was especially famous for its risk. Charles V gave Oudewater the privilege of fair weighing. Many women accused of witchcraft have made use of it. You always got away well in Oudewater. Remember that until 1750 your life as a woman was not certain and that it was not a medieval hobby, but a practice from the Renaissance. Both the Catholics and the Protestants believed in addition to God in the devil with whom you could make covenants. Witches were extremely suitable for this, with all its consequences. Anyway Oudewater was honest. Via a beautiful towpath walk along the IJssel to Hekendorp. A very small village with quite a bit of history if you just take Goejanverwellesluis with something far away. Here is the area where two drainage canals flow from the Rhine to the IJssel. Single and Double Wiericke were dug in 1350. Later, an additional dike (Prinsendijk) was constructed to merge two small waterways into a large lake: De Oude Hollandse Waterlinie. So there were many soldiers in Hekendorp and Goejanverwelle who, on behalf of the patriotic rulers in The Hague, arrested Wilhelmina of Prussia when she wanted to enter the Netherlands with her retinue. It happened on June 28, 1787. It was smart of her, because after this provocation her brother can no longer refuse her request for help. That must have been a buzz on all those narrow dikes with all those soldiers. Along the Wierickes it is a beautiful walk. It is a pity that the Gouda Woerden railway line makes it difficult to pass through, but the landscape with the Oukoopse Molen and quay is wonderful. Back at the IJssel, walk to Haastrecht. It is where the Vlist enters the IJssel and with that you can earn money. Haastrecht raised its toll at its lock. A small army from Dordrecht stopped this by destroying the locks. Haastrecht has a beautiful town hall and a museum called "Diocese of Vliet". The "Diocese of Vlietjes" were a rich regent family. Papa Marecllus (mayor of Gouda) had a huge house built in Haastrecht in 1877 of which his daughter Paulina turned it into a museum in 1922 to display the riches of the family they had collected over the centuries. Again beautiful towpaths run to Gouda. That was unexpected, because there is of course a lot of industrial activity along this increasingly wider river.
