A varied stage with lots of greenery and water. Two rivers are visited (Linge and Waal) that will no longer be a border river. In Leerdam you will pass the hofje of Mrs. Van Aerden, a stinking rich widow from The Hague, who wanted to surprise her female family member (who turned out to live in Leerdam) to stay (92 years!). And the women still live there! The Linge. It is a completely Dutch river of 108 km in length, which caused considerable water nuisance over the centuries and has therefore been dammed. There are many dikes, water basins and of course: boats. Following the dike, you will pass orchards and castle Merckenburg (Heukelum), where until recently a feudal baron van Heeckeren reigned. Through the dike it is beautiful. Heukelum itself is also worth seeing with its church and very old city remains. Following the Appeldijk, pass a beautiful walking path (Orchideeen route) near the brick factory. A moist path takes you across a narrow strip of land between the river and the lake to the Zuidlingedijk, where it turned out to be necessary to raise things even further. De Linge looks great here with all the peat lakes along it. Halfway the dike is a historic weighhouse, where goods (potato fruit) were weighed before being shipped. The Linge forest alternates the route. A recreational area of forest and water of around 300 ha. All paths run straight, but it is cool. To round off the border from Zuid-Hollend in the east to the Waal, you first pass the Betuwe Route. A costly (4.8 billion EU) freight track that has been built for 10 years and over which in 2009 a handful of freight trains roar over it every day. Train traffic did increase in 2012. The Waal is just border from Vuren to Gorinchem. That is at least a river, with a little high water that can be 1 km wide. Pass Fort Vuren (Closing part of the Dutch Waterline) and look at Loevestein Castle across the street and finally end up in Gorinchem. It does represent a bit more than Leerdam (see also the weapon). It has been a fortified city since time immemorial, where the water Beggars murdered in 1572 priests because they refused to convert to Protestantism. They became the martyrs of Gorkum. And think again of the poem by Tollens: Where Maas and Waal flush together and Gorkum rises from afar.
