Zwolle a young provincial capital. It took until around 1800 before Zwolle became a real provincial capital. Until then, Kampen and Deventer had to tolerate next to it. Zwolle has always been just behind the lines, because it was not on the IJssel that connected the Hanseatic cities with the hinterland via the Rhine. Zwolle was on the AA, the Zwarte Water and the Vecht. It took until 1819 before Zwolle was connected to the IJssel via the Willemsvaart. Already 1000 years ago Zwolle was in the books and trade was conducted. Zwolle is a nice city for walking. The walk consists of three parts: The center, the Red Light District and the Wezenlandenpark. The center has many beautiful monuments such as the Peperbus (tower) basilica and the Church of Saint Michael, depicted in green glass in front of his church. The Sassenpoort is beautiful, while on the north side you can still admire a lot of city walls (from the medieval explanation). Because the Librije restaurant once won a Michelin star, you will find quite a few buildings of this club in the city. You can sleep, eat and drink for a few hundred euros per person per night. Zwolle has produced people like Thorbecke. It was he who was commissioned by King Willem II to revise the constitution. Given the stamping abroad, the king chose eggs for his money and wanted to be ahead of the commotions. On his own, Thorbecke writes his constitution, thereby laying the foundation for current parliamentary democracy with ministerial responsibility. Recently the PVV experienced that Thorbecke has organized this well. All this based on the Trias Politica (Montesquieu). Thorbecke was rewarded with three cabinets that bore his name. It is also interesting that at the age of 40 he married a girl of 21 and that he gave Aletta Jacobs an admission ticket to the medical faculty just before his death. A hundred years earlier, Zwolle had a famous patriotic pioneer, Joan Derk van de Capellen tot den Pol. A liberal who was inspired by American independence and who was averse to backroom politics. In 1837 the last death sentence was executed in Zwolle. That happened at the time by hanging and in public: De Grote Markt. It took until 1870 before the death penalty was officially abolished. As a defensive city, Zwolle has never been so important, but the bastions can still be recognized. Zwolle has used many (also new) buildings, while there are still unpaved paths here and there that offer a beautiful view of the old center. The Sassenpoort is the example of that. It is one of the top 100 monuments in the Netherlands. The walk ends along the Almelose canal, which is full of houseboats here. The route returns at a bridge to the Weezenpark, which leads back to the old center via the hospital.
